Allegheny trailers?

Is anyone familiar with Allegheny trailers? I gather they specialize in creating heavy-duty frames for utility companies, the few I've found via google seem to be pretty beefy.

I have a guy offering me a 4x8' Allegheny for a negotiable $150. All he can tell me is it has a pintle, seems to be made of I-beams, is rated for a #3000 load, has decent tires. He's an old farmer who bought it for the pickup bed that was on it and has no way of taking a photo for me.

Is this a worthy basis for a trailer build? Too beefy? Should I drive the 60 miles to look, or just pass..?

I concur with the fine Dr. SSeaman...150$ for a frame ready for 1-1/2 tons is well worth it. 4x8 is also a great starting point.....have the guy send you a pic before you drive out there.

I would start at $150, if it is rough shape you can always go lower, you might even be able to make a few bucks reselling if you don't want to keep it.

Don't know about anywhere else, but in Ohio trailers aren't titled, just registered/plated.

I went for a look today, franky the condition was better than I expected, but it was heavier/larger than I thought as well. It seems to be well made.

It was made to carry a full 8' ford pickup bed, is a full 12' from bumper to lunette, 7 3/4 feet long at the bed, and is 3 1/2 feet wide. The axle is 4 1/2 feet and 3.5" in diameter. The lunette is 22 inches high, so that would have to be changed. The stamp on the bed says it's #1200 empty with an #1800 capacity. I assume the bed was probably 3-400 pounds, so that makes the trailer about 800 pounds as is.

on the good side, its got a parking brake, is pretty much rust free, has the same bolt pattern as the wheels on the Trooper, and has a clearance of 16" at the frame.

the downside is weight (I think- is this a good weight??), the fact I would want to shorten the frame by a couple of feet, and I may need to redo the lunette and lower it down.

I guess the question now is, is this a good start for a budget build?

It looks built like a brick sh*t house...I'd say SCORE!!

Do you want to do just a tub trailer, do you want to do an enclosed with tent on top, do you need something that's multi-purpose? I'd say minimum loose the back bumper, cut a bunch of steel off the tongue, and do a SOA.



Write down the needs v. wants x budget...see what you come up with!!!

I've been thinking hard... I ran the budget and I think I need to hold off on a trailer build until next summer.
