Coleman Lantern Care........

Over the last couple years, the cost of Coleman White Fuel has gone from $2.00 per gallon to now $9.00 per gallon for the generic at Wal~Mart.

A couple years ago I found a brand new, used once Coleman Duel Fuel Lantern at a local garage sale for just $5.00 bucks. The guy assured me that it worked. It also came with a Coleman Plastic carry case. I figured that if it didn't work.....I just got a nice Coleman case to carry my other lanterns for $5 bucks.

I got home and tried to light it. All it did was Flame up. Flames, I'm tellin' ya! It would not light properly. I tried to take it apart, but just could not figure out how to fix it.

Well, today.....while I had some London Broil on the new BBQ, I decided to fix it no matter what!!!!! I knew I had a wonderful dinner waiting for me no matter what!!!:steak::friday::chef:

I started taking it apart from the top down. I pumped it up, and liquid fuel was coming out of the top of the Generator. Not good. I knew it was clogged. So I kept taking it down as far as I could.

Then I began to spray Brake Cleaner into the "Generator" (very important!!). And into the base where the Generator sits. I kept pumping while it was apart and was finally able to make fuel flow freely from the base of the generator. I felt I had freed the clog!

I put it all back together and I lit it......! Dude! Sweet!!!!

I let it burn until ALL of the old gasoline burned out. It burned just fine!

My $5.00........$65 dollar new duel fuel Lantern.....now works fine!

I can see now, after taking it apart, that all of these parts are replaceable. So, don't Ever think that your Coleman Fuel Product is broken for good!

You can fix it!

Next up! Lookin' for a like new Coleman Duel Fuel Stove, and Heater, at my nearest garage sale! I'm going to start switching to Duel fuel since White Gas went up so high! This way, I could save space and weight, and only carry extra gasoline, which can be used both in the "SWR" and my Coleman. No more white fuel!

See in between the mantles. This is the "Generator" that must be cleaned when you have a problem. (sorry....I forgot to take pics when it was apart).

Moral of this Coleman Story....!

Always store your Coleman Fuel Products......Empty of All Fuel!!!!!!!!

SW, do these burn quiet? I assume they do.

I switched to Dietz Lanterns a few years ago to escape the propane noise and have been happy with it. Just curious about also having dual fuel stove and lantern on trips where space may be tight.

Thanks for asking!

YES! This burns quiet! I'm so happy I finally got it fixed today! I just needed to take the time to work on it.

I also carry a 12Volt Lantern with me. It might be a good idea. Because after your Coleman runs out of fuel at night. You will have to let it cool down before you refill with fuel. Never refuel a Coleman Lantern while it's HOT! You will need another light source to make this refill happen.

So.....12Volt.....is my back up.

The Dietz look awesome! I would love to have one. I just don't want to spend that much. I really like them....though! I know the quality is there!

you should know that gasoline isnt ideal for these lanterns, and might cause them to foul up faster. but since you know how to clean them, no big deal.

i use dual fuel products instead of propane because our camping supplies double as emergency supplies (read earthquake, post Katrina style). i might not be able to find propane, but i know i could find gasoline.

i should also add, ive replaced the generator in a non dual fuel lantern. its SUPER easy! a couple of wrenches and youre done!

Timely thread, I'm working on my mid 40's Coleman 412B dual burner stove tonight.

FWIW there are a plethora of repair and restoration part available for the Coleman lineup, everything from generators (under $10 new) to stickers for the shells. There is even a fairly active collectors club (appropriately names the International Colemans Collector Club). I've got a small but growing fleet of Coleman appliances, for the most part they all still work great too!

i bought my replacement parts directly from coleman. it was cheap, certainly cheaper than a new lanter. unfortunatly, the parts didnt arrive in time for my camping trip, so i went and bought a dual fuel (something i had wanted to buy anyway, and i had a gift card). now we have two lanterns that both use the same mantels (different generators though) the older single fuel serves its duty as a campsite lantern when supplies are plentiful. i will be taking dual fuel lantern and stove with me on expeditions though, incase i run out of coleman fuel.

I just picked up a BRAND-NEW Dual fuel Coleman at our local Deseret Industries (DI). It had been dropped and dented in one corner, but took it apart, peened the dent out and VOILA!!! Fantastic stove for..... 6.00 bones!!! Consequently, the Coleman stoves are a "dime a donuts" at our DI and Goodwill stores. It isn't uncommon for me to be able to pick up two or three a month if I wanted, it seems they always have them there. I can pick them up if there is some interest for them.

I like Coleman products. I have purchased 5 lanterns, several stoves and some burners, and I'll bet I dont have $100 in the lot. Woohoo!!:wings:

The DI has been one of my favorite Coleman sources too. Scored my 425F for $6 and a 200A lantern for $8. The common Coleman appliances really don't have much of a used value, based on the shear quantities that Coleman produced and the amount of them collecting dust in every basement. However that just means they are that much easier to get for us :D
