Jeep Parts in Central and South America

The wife and I are looking at doing a central and south american expedition, and we're trying to decide on a platform. Thing is, the vehicle is also going to do double duty as our daily driver here in Revelstoke, BC.

We're looking seriously at FJ60s, but I'd rather something more common here in Canada, so I was thinking for building a late YJ or TJ for the expo. Question is, can I count on at least a basic parts network in the majority of central and south american countries? I know Toyotas have a solid network, and Land Rover is at least present, but what about parts for the venerable Wrangler?

FJ60 - every country

Jeep has a specialist following - some countries zero support, as they were never sold there, you might find the odd chrysler/GM dealer who could get parts shipped in, but for me its not the ideal platform for latinolandia.

You'll have run out of space by the time you packed the spares and tools for the jeep

Landrover is OK in some countries Brazil , Argentina, Colombia -
no support in others, Venezuela for example

no one else had thoughts on this? I'm curious as well. It's a current dream, to pack up and cruise down for a while.

agreed, the fj60 is more of a worldwide vehicle. Its what I'd take if I was leaving canada and the u.s.

However, I think a lot has to do about knowing whats prone to going wrong.

If the trucks in good shape, and you take the trouble-prone, specific items, you'll probably be fine. My xj in stock form, with the Chrysler 8.25 rear axle and some unibody strengthening added, honestly, doesn't have much in the way of a weak link running stockish-sized tires. Again, just engine specific sensors, maybe a spare fuel pump/alternater/starter, and I'd feel pretty solid driving it south.


As for land rovers, I'd say that yeah, it is likely to have better parts availability, but then again, I'd rather not spend my whole trip hopping from shop to shop fixing things. haha!
