agreed, the fj60 is more of a worldwide vehicle. Its what I'd take if I was leaving canada and the u.s.
However, I think a lot has to do about knowing whats prone to going wrong.
If the trucks in good shape, and you take the trouble-prone, specific items, you'll probably be fine. My xj in stock form, with the Chrysler 8.25 rear axle and some unibody strengthening added, honestly, doesn't have much in the way of a weak link running stockish-sized tires. Again, just engine specific sensors, maybe a spare fuel pump/alternater/starter, and I'd feel pretty solid driving it south. 
As for land rovers, I'd say that yeah, it is likely to have better parts availability, but then again, I'd rather not spend my whole trip hopping from shop to shop fixing things. haha!
