During October 2.000, our current president, or is it dictator? announced on national television that a road had been opened to Macuro, which happens to be the first place on the American continent mainland where Cristopher Columbus set foot. Until then, Columbus had only visited the islands in the Caribbean Sea.
Macuro never had a road before, and could only be reached by boat. Therefore, this announcement started the most amazing race between 4x4 aficionados from all over the country, just to see who would be the first to get there courtesy of the new road, if we can all it that way. It also created great expectation among Macuro inhabitants, as they thought it would finally put an end to years of isolation.
Needless to say, a few friends and I took part in this race, and despite rolling over my trusty 80 series very early in the trip, we managed to do some field repairs on the spot, and drive her over 1,500 kilometers to be the third group that arrived to Macuro and get back home in a safe, reliable manner, as usual.
Assessing the damage and repairing my rolled 80 series:
Of course, we could not expect anything less from our beloved president than a lie about the road condition, as you can see here:
Our arrival there was a big event for the people of Macuro. We even spent a great deal of time giving many kids their first ride ever in an automobile. They just wouldn't stop yelling at us, begging for a ride.
You can find the complete story here, How we arrived to Macuro, or Columbus Port, if you will in my Blog, even though it is in Spanish, it has many, many photos and very few words. I’ve also set up Google translator there, for what it is worth... I must also apologize for the picture quality, but all I got are these poor quality scans.
I hope you, fellow Overlanders, find this blog entry amusing and to your liking. And please, excuse my poor English!
