Apple Tablet: iPad

Finally maybe a little customer justice coming!!! Garmin, Lowrance, Magellan et al deserve what they get. They've, IMO, been stupid with respect to lagging technology and/or software updates/options for years. Although I like the form factor/hardware of my Lowrance Baja 540C the mapping software is a joke not to mention outdated.

And I don't even want to start my rant about Garmin.

All things come to pass and this one can't come soon enough!

I have to admit, i have one reservation about the tablet.

How am i going to be able to type, with out using an external keyboard and with using the double thumb technique ?

As for the rest of my uses it will be perfect especially for the 110.

What do you all think ?

The latest rumor suggests Apple may announce two versions
of slate computer. The first would be the 10 inch version we've
been discussing so far. The second would be a larger version of
the iPod Touch, with a 5 inch screen that would offer an 800x480
resolution. That's about 4 times more than the pixels displayed
by an iPhone.

The 5 inch screen would keep the device size down so it's easily
transportable, but more useful than the iPhone for web browsing.
The larger case also makes room for a bigger battery.

Both models would have multi-touch display like the iPhone has.
They would run the iPhone OS, making them compatible with the
100,000+ iPhone applications found in the iTunes store. And hopefully
both will have true GPS built in, so the iPhone navigation apps will
work without a connection to a cell phone tower.

I agree with Yudda that an on-screen keyboard won't let you
type as quickly and accurately as a conventional keyboard.
If you need to enter much text using a slate computer, then
a Bluetooth-attached portable keyboard may be the best solution.
There are several, originally designed to work with PDAs, that
fold up to pocket size.

You can still use the on-screen keyboard for quick text entry,
or for use on the go, where sitting at a table is not practical.

The NY Times reports:
"... another recently departed Apple employee tipped me: 'You will be very surprised how you interact with the new tablet.'"
http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/12/23/2010-the-year-of-the-tablet/

So what are the ways one can interact with a tablet computer?

-- a physical keyboard attached by Bluetooth

-- an on-screen keyboard using fingers or stylus

-- printing or writing on the screen, which the computer translates to text
.. a stylus would work better than a finger for writing

-- making "gestures" on the screen
.. Palm Computing's Grafitti language is one example
.. new capacitive displays allow multi-touch (commands using more than one finger at a time, like pinching to make an image smaller)

-- voice recognition ("I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.")

-- accelerometers that detect motions of the tablet (shaking, turning, etc)

EDIT

Two additional ways to interact with a slate computer:

Pressure sensitive touchpad
Imagine a touchscreen with many more levels of sensitivity
to pressure than the typical touchscreen. Wacom makes this sort
of touchpad for graphic artists.

Swype keyboard.
Instead of tapping on the virtual keyboard, Swype enables you to
trace a path over the keys without lifting, starting at the first letter of
the word, and lifting when you reach the last letter.

The Swype program uses a dictionary to make intelligent guesses
about the word you were trying to enter. Multiple languages are
supported.

This sounds impossible, but it works! Swype claims you can learn
to enter 40 words per minute on a cell phone virtual keyboard.
Check Swype out here http://www.swypeinc.com/
To see a novice user learning Swype http://jkkmobile.blogspot.com/2009/12/testing-swype-for-android-on-motorola.html

There is a version of Swype for Windows Mobile phones, and
just released for Android.

Any other input methods?

If it can't be put in a pocket, it's not going to destroy other devices. Even if a 5" screen can be put in a pocket, women won't do it.

I would like a 10" screen, but I expect smaller. Apple expects to be paid a lot of money for anything on the large size. I will be very disappointed if this new device doesn't make a superior vehicle gps.

The OS will be as interesting as the device. I expect there are clues in 10.6.2 and well as the iphone. I agree with those who say it will be a real ebook reader. I also expect even more mobileme connectivity.
