Light Mount

Looking for options on mounting this light on 5/8 round tubing on a roof rack..

Not really wanting to drill holes in the tube, since it'd prolyl chew enough material out of the tube to weaken it. And I'm not exactly sure there's enough space for the light to fit like that.. Would have to swap out to a longer carriage bolt on the light as well..

Welding a tab on isn't really an option..

Thinking about bolting a mounting tab on, just trying to figure out the best way to do it. What I've got in mind right now is a 2x2x3/8 plate mounted to the bottom of the bar with u-bolts.. I'm kinda blinded to that right now and just can't visualize doing it any other way..

Been searching google for stuff, but it seems like most of the stuff I'm finding is for 3" tube, made from billet aluminum and chrome plated for $100 per part..

That's sorta what I'm searcing for, but fits 1.5 - 2".. These will be going on the back of a BajaRack Mega Mule.. Best I can tell the tubes are closer to 1".. (don't have it to measure yet)

These look like that might fit the bill though..



Biggest issue I seem to have is that the Hella lights were only $8 each shipped.. I just have a hard time justifying double that for a couple of mounts for them.. I'll prolly end up spending countless hours trying to find a less expensive solution and end up only saving $5 or $6..

I used a pipe clamp that I bought from Lowe's for about 50¢. Then for another 50¢ or so, I bought a piece of 90° angle iron which would attach to the pipe clamp and offer the light a flat place to rest. Then I drilled a hole in that "flat place to rest," spray painted it all black, and came up with this:


The Yakima Megawarrior bar you see it clamped to is about 1" in diameter. A drop of LocTite on it, and it's never budged.

If I were to use this method to mount expensive lights, I'd mount pop a quick spot weld on the mount bolts so that they could never back off (you can find a local welder to do this on his lunch break for the cost of a pack of cigarettes), then use the money you've saved to buy some good locking nuts similar to these to hold the lights themselves in place (while keeping them from vanishing!).

That's the price range I'm thinking about for a $8 light.. I'm just not seeing it all put together.. Googled "pipe clamp" and got a ton of hits, saw a few things that looked promising, but nothing that I could fit into your pic

That's the price range I'm thinking about for a $8 light.. I'm just not seeing it all put together.. Googled "pipe clamp" and got a ton of hits, saw a few things that looked promising, but nothing that I could fit into your pic

The clamp is actually made for electrical conduit and can be found at most hardware stores. It looks like this:



The bolt shown is for tightening to the round bar, the flat spot is where you'll bolt this:



Just cut this "slotted angle iron" with a hacksaw to the length you need. Attach one side of it to the clamp above, and the other to the light. It will look like mine above.

(I'll try and get you a better pic of how I did this tomorrow when daylight comes.)

Doh.. Those are minerallac straps.. They come in 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1 1/2 and 2 inch sizes..

I've got maybe a hundred of them in my work truck which is parked behind the Hummer right now.. (faceplant)

Wanna know what else I've got in the garage from my last run in with mounting lights on a roof rack..??
