Not the greatest picture but a quick and easy (and cheap) awning- we attach tarp with 3 bolts to front runner rack and 2-3 poles depending on the wind

Picked up a used NRS Riverwing this past weekend. Love the space it creates. Nice heavy fabric and great sewing. A bit awkward to set up and definitely a 2 man operation. I need to work on the seams - the seam tape is coming off and even the fabric is not quite waterproof. Any suggestions for repair? I am calling NRS in the morning to see what they recommend but thought I would ask here also.

I've been real happy with my NRS wing, But like yours the seam tape failed. I removed the tape and thinned out some Aquaseal and brushed it on the seams, It's held up for years and still doesn't leak. I purchased mine used as well (It was on one of their company trips and catalog), and saved quite a bit. I've made some improvements to mine, Adjustable poles, An assortment of stakes, A few extra poles for the sides, and removable 25' and 20' Cam Straps with loops to make set up and adjustment a one person job (I didn't make them removable on my MSR canopy and they tend to get tangled).

Here is a tarp I found that is made by Grand Trunk that rolls up into a small bag. It happens to fit to my Tepui Ayer RTT. It just came with tie down ropes, which I had two poles that are too long for the ropes, but it works as-is and even in wind with just one rope to each pole it holds up. I do have additional ropes if wind really picks up, or I just need to find longer ropes...

My idea for this came after spending a HOT afternoon in Arches National Park where my wife and I hid on one side of the trailer from the burning sun. The tarp also works well in rain as rain just rolls off. Simple and takes up very little room.

Ok, I have a question which is likely unanswerable but I'd love some thoughts, and this seems like the thread for it.

How much overhang do people feel is the minimum? I am considering building a custom awning (I'll leave the details to another thread) but what's the minimum? For example, is 3 feet a waste?

I am not overly worried about rain, more about sun protection (I have little kids) and making an area to change shoes and the like. I don't need a huge cooking area, but a spot to set up a couple of chairs maybe.

Unspecific, yes. But what is the minimum to be useful? I'd love to not have to stake it down (free standing, so I can adjust the truck etc) but I will if I have to.

^3 ft. is probably minimum. I probably have that to 4', but then it depends on where the sun is. As in my first picture above, we had morning sun going on so the other side of the ladder was in the shade with plenty of room for two chairs. A chair goes on each side of the ladder if it's raining. Now if it was blowing rain, we'd probably end up in my Jeep or the RTT.

Whatever is the minimum, when it comes to awnings (especially for sun), more is definitely better. I've recently upgraded from a hard-case spring-rolled awning to the newer ARB bag awning and one of the big motivators was an extra 2' of overhang. Going from 8'x6' to 8' x 8' actually makes a really big difference - it also means less having to re-position tables/chairs and I don't setup the side-shade as often.

More is definitely better. Alu-Cab Shadow Awn. Funds and logistics finally allowed it. I'm glad I waited for this to become available. The lack of need for poles is amazing.

I picked up a 10 x 10 Ozark canopy at Walmart today, 50 out the door. I'm happy.

Chris, that is an awesome awning, just checked out the makers video on it.
My old Campinglabs awning is getting jealous, may have to upgrade one day.
