I took my daughter fishing from a pier over the weekend and a pair of pelicans were being fed from the dock.

This is an image of a bald eagle that I photographed in a location I never expected to see an eagle in - west central Indiana on the Wabash River just north of Terre Haute. It was shot handheld, with a 600mm lens, in a rolling, rocking 17 foot aluminum boat. Just keeping the bird in the viewfinder was a major achievement, but it is the best of several frames, and does clearly demonstrate the bald eagles have returned to the Wabash River basin, where there were none to be seen for years and years.

I have lots of better images of eagles, all shot in Alaska, or Colorado, or Montana, but none better from Indiana yet. I saw several juvenile eagles on the river that day as well, so hallelujah!

Mule Deer Buck in Backyard

We have a mule deer buck that visits our backyard in town in Montrose, CO now and then. Has for a couple of years. Eats my wife's green tomatoes in her garden in season. It was here this morning and left and then came back late this afternoon. This morning after the buck left I stepped in a big fresh "calling card" that he left beside our apple tree and did not know it. Then I went inside and made a mess on the carpet before I realized what I was tracking in. Sure am glad that I am running on all 8 cylinders 24/7. Not the greatest pictures as I took them thru a dirty back window but fun to watch him.

Early August is usually a good time to catch the Desert Big Horn in Zion N.P. moving about. Saturday didn't disappoint.
