I'm in the market for a rooftop tent, though I really have no idea what I want to buy. As of right now I have plans on purchasing a Camping Labs RTT but I would like to know what other options there are out there to choose from, and what your opinions are on them. Strengths, weaknesses, and such.

You might just wait for TRDParts4U to run another special. The Moombasa tent should do the job.

Thanks, I hadn't even heard of that brand. Gives me something to go research as well now. :sombrero:

I have the Camping Labs RTT and have been really impressed with it. It was inexpensive but it is not cheap. Very well made, easy to set up, etc. Materials are a lot heavier than I expected. I've had it in wind, rain, snow, etc. and no problem. Vinyl cover is standing up well to Phoenix sun and occasional mesquite trees.

Yeah, I took a trip to the more Southern part of Texas last week to look at a Camping Labs RTT and I looved it, but the model he had was the largest they sell and way too big for my application.

Whatever you get, make sure you can sit up (on your knees, if possible) inside it. Whether for donning your britches or a late night pee, it's nice to be able to move about.
Forum member "Swiss" has a Maggiolina, loves it... ...but I could never live with something like that.

I've been contemplating a magnolia for some time now but I can't seem to get by the fact that in order to use the magnolia you essentially have to give up the ability to carry anything else in your roof rack. At least with the standard soft RTTs you still have the front (or back) of your rack to use. I know some will argue that you can store things under the tent and even on top in the case of certain models but I just don't see it being as usable. Maybe I'm wrong...

Wolf, stop by the camping section, lots of roof top tent banter in there.

I have the Maggiolina AirLand model.

The Italian site where they are made is www.autohome.it

You do lose pretty much all of your roof rack with the Maggiolina models and the Columbus models by Autohome, but they are really great tents and can be left on all year.
Mine has been on my roof since March of 2008 and looks brand new still, even after being exposed to the elements and UV light from the sun.

I keep Marine wax with UV inhibitors in it, and it keeps it in great shape.

Here are a few of my favorite pics of mine.
Yes, I am a picture whore :sombrero:

There are many different roof top tents though discussed in the camping section.
And this video here from the Autohomes US site always gets me in the camping mood.

Thanks for all the info so far everyone, I didn't know half of this stuff existed. I'm a moron when it comes to RTT info. :sombrero:
