We use to run the family wagon (73 VW 412 and 68 Squareback) all over the "jeep" trails in CO in the 70's. VW's go like stink if they can keep both back wheels on the ground.

Set of chains and that 412 could navigate 3ft of snow no problem. Bottom was smooth and it would just slide along like a sled. Front wheels acting like rudders. That car only got stuck once. It took me spinning it out and dumping it in a 10ft deep ditch backwards to do it.

I have had a 66, 70 Bug and a 77 Scirocco. All of them I took off road. They all tolerated my abuse really well. The bugs I blew up twice-each! Both were highly modified and ran well but, rocks were always harder.

I drove an 89 VW Fox Wolfsburg for the 2 years I lived and worked on Mt. Hood... I lifted it 1.5in and ran all season hightraction tires and I'll tell you that thing was better in the snow than most of the POS domestic SUV's I had to push around the parking lot daily. I also took it up alot of forest service access roads of varying degrees of bad repair and it did great.

Come to think of it I've taken all of my VW's off road to some degree. My 92 Jetta which was a 202hp street monster got me out to TImber Oregon to go camping... not fun, but I got it over every water break I needed to... Before I turned into a Toyota enthusiast, I was wheeling what I had, VW's. I'd never give up my Runner, but I would love to have the motor out of my Jetta in a nice MK2 GTI...

I had used my '74 Volkswagen Thing for quite of bit of offroading in its first life. Prior to me having it, it was my father's for 12 years. One of the toughest little vehicles I've ever driven. Bare bones and simple design that never let us down. I fondly remember embarrassing 4wd trucks in places that you wouldn't possibly imagine it being able to go. I really can't wait untill I have the time and resources to start my restoration on it and get it back out on the road.
