New member, New Jeep, Age old question

Hi all, I've been lurking here for a while and have got to say, Great Forum! I've also been driving myself nutty trying to decide on new tires for my 07 Wrangler Unlimited. I will be driving a lot of dirt and gravel roads, and easy to moderate (maybe) trails, so I'm not building a rock crawler (I luv rock crawlers, but right now my interests lie else where). I am not going to run a lift for a couple of years, so I would like to stick to a 32 or 33 in tire. I've looked at BFG's, Nitto Terra Grapplers, Bridgestone AT RH-s, and Firestone Dest. AT. Any suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks, Expo rocks.

Personally, I am a big fan of BFG All-Terrain T/A's for the terrain you mentioned. They are a really solid tire with excellent tread life. They also have excellent performance in wet weather and snow. They also provide excellent traction in most cases - with exception of really slimy mud. For what you described, they may also give you some added confidence to push a bit further and further every trip out (who needs drugs, we have trucks!).

If you are not rock crawling, avoid the goodyear MT/R's (even though they are not on your list). They are heavy and hard to keep balanced. I know several people running the Nitto Terra grapplers, and they are quite happy with them, even on the rocks. They appear to wear very pretty well, balance well, the sidewalls hold up, and the tread doesn't chunk out to bad (unlike the BFG MT's do). I'm even considering a set for my TJ...which gets used on the rocks.

Goodyear MTRs can be a pain and I agree with the Goodrich A/T for your application.

BFG MT's would get number one vote from me. Had them on our family Ford and they were great tires. If you're on a budget I've had Kumho MT's on my Jeep for a year now and they've held up great. No chunking, flats, problems balancing, etc. The Maxxis MT's are getting to be quite popular lately too, though I don't have any experience with those.

Look around on some boards see if you can snag a deal on the 32's that come on the JK Rubi. I know a lot of folks are pulling tires right off to go to 35's and the like....

Other than that, I like the BFG A/T's. They have always served me well. I have heard good things about the Firestones as well.

And...as you will see in one of the other forums...I am researching the Toyo Open Country's too...but can't reccomend one way or another on those. Trying to find out myself!

+1 for the Nittos, I think they are as capable as the BFG's and much friendlier on the road.

I'm also a big fan of the new design BFG MT's on the JK Rubicons, they are great on the road but it remains to be seen how they wear over time.

If you can hang around for a few months until my Rubicon shows up I may be switching out to another set of Nittos like I have on my 80 series.

BFG have had a three-ply side wall longer then anyother manufacturer that I am aware of. Back when it was thought of as unecessary. 35+ years. They have run the Baja more then anyother tire. They are easier to find in out of the way locations if ever you might find yourself in need. The AT carry a 50 thousand mile warranty. A great bang for the buck.
