Here's a blog entry describing a 2009 expedition that traveled to a remote section of Queensland, Australia. The goal was to visit the sand dunes at Shelburne Bay on the Cape York peninsula. The dunes are as much as 300 feet (100 meters) tall, and are reputed to be made of the most pure white sand of any dunes worldwide. The ecosystem of the area is unusual, too.

Kym and Lyn Bolton led a group of 8 on the 80 km trek. The track the group followed was so overgrown that they chose to use quad buggies rather than 4x4 trucks.

The blog includes lots of photos illustrating the trip. The first two pages describe the history of the dunes. Aborigines, homesteaders, naturalists, mining corporations and the federal government all have roles in the story.
