Hey all!
Here's a brief description of the 3rd trail opportunity. Since it is a 1.5 to 2 rated drive, I don't see a need to limit the size of the group.
FS 68D starts at Cherry Rd (Hwy 169) and I-17. It heads to the top of Squaw Peak about 12 miles in from I-17. At 6500', it looms over the Verde Valley and offers perhaps the best view of central AZ I've ever found. From the Bradshaw's to the Four Peaks, the Tonto Basin, almost the entire Rim, Flagstaff, Williams and Granite Mt. are all on display. The top of the mountain is covered in towers, so a wheelchair could be easily maneuvered around to see all the sights. Squaw Peak was part of the Heliograph system under General Miles and linked Ft Whipple to Glassford Hill, on to Squaw Peak, and down to Camp Verde. It also transmitted messages down to Mt. Ord and eventually all the way to New Mexico. The road is unimproved, portions of it are a typical mesa top rutted road. We'll also pass the trail head into Arnold Canyon (details on Wales Arnold in the post below - he was an early AZ pioneer).
If we make good time, there will also be an opportunity to do a portion of the Great Western Trail to the south and come out on Dugas Rd.
This trail is big rig friendly - even White Power Wagons with 4Wheel Campers.
