Battery Powered Lanterns

Seems like there are a whole bunch of new battery powered lanterns that have hit the market.

Black Diamond, Coleman, Burnton to name just a few.

Any feedback on the full size models ?

I have the BD Apollo which works very well for a small lantern. But I`d like to get something fullsize.

Recall some folks being unhappy with the LED lanterns as not being bright enough or to directional in beam. Maybe the newer ones are better ?

I have the remote control LED one from Cabelas I bought a few years back.
It is not very bright at all, but setup at night by camp helps light up the area around the rig if I need to get something from it.

I did see the new Black Diamond one in the newest REI flyer that came out, and it has 250 lumens.

Thanks Corey and UK4x4.

Was looking at the BD but it is expensive compared to many others. But again my Apollo has been a very worthwhile investment. Albeit expensive also. Perhaps a connection here ??

The remote Coleman I recall was not well received but Coleman has come up with a few new models. Remotes are nice but hard to find in the dark !!

Hopefully a few more folks will chime in with there experiences.

I use two rechargable 12v LED work lights from harbour freight, have a hook on top and a magnetic base, they work of 12V so you can recharge off the car while driving.

stickum or hangum anywhere you wish, not expencive- I had mine 3 years now, broke one of the hooks thats it

I have this BD one. It is expensive and honestly it's only decent, not great. It throws out a bit of a halo (hot spot) so the light isn't super even. Most of my use has been in the garage and house as the weather hasn't allowed us to go camp yet. The idea for it was to have a lot of light, no heat and battery operated. We have a one year old now and she's a little too interested in things that can hurt her. A bad burn in the woods isn't something I really want to deal with. With this lantern I can use it in the tent, on a table etc and not worry about it hurting her or us. Another way I justified the cost is for additional light in a power outage. I've got lights, flashlights, etc up the ying yang at the house but honestly this is the light I'd pull out for the family. It's easy to use, doesn't take "weird" batteries or have complicated charging options. It does dim which is nice but anything less than 100% brightness produces a faint humming sound from the light. I have to look into this because I've built numerous LED lights and never had any noise come from them.

Hope this helps. All in all it's a decent light. I think it's the internal reflector that gives the halo and I was going to take it apart to see if I could change it any.

I receiced a flourescent one as a present a couple of years back. Thing works great for a cheapy picked up at kohl's. Have use dit camping, in the house during power outages and outside when haging out in the yard.
Also have one of the LED work lights...thanks for the idea of using it camping..don't know why it didn't occur to me before..

We were given one of the GE fluorescent lanterns for our wedding, and it has been great. It runs on four D-size batteries.

I have, well, "had" that exact one for a number of years, probably close to 10 years to be honest.
But I was moving all my gear around onto some shelves I had built in the garage a little while ago, and the lantern got damaged in the process.
So, I've chucked it, but it was a decent light for a low price, and it served me well for a number of years.
I've just starting thinking about getting a replacement, and whether i should go with another battery operated one, or back to the old gas/kerosene or mini-propane bottle style.

4x4Mike brought up a great point regarding safety for the little ones, and since we have a 2 year old boy, and plan on at least one more little 'un I think I'm going to stick with battery powered.

I've also made a couple of lights.

Home made LED light

The pole light can be plugged into an extension cord (12v) and moved around as needed. I also travel with a porta power that I can plug the light into and move to a table or tree. It doesn't get hot so I can hang it in a tree or leave it on a table and not worry.

Ughhh...
I can't find a retailer in Canada that sells it, even after going through Rayovac's website. And Amazon.com won't ship it north of the border.
Amazon.ca is a mere shell of the .com site with maybe 1% of the products offered.

After a lot of research ... i found the folks on CPF recommending this lantern:

here it is:
