    Default Battery Guage

In the Spring 2010 Overland Journal - Steve Smith Veg-G-Wagon has a battery guage from Transportation Safety Devices, and I want one.

The guage has two scales on it: one for cranking, and one for operating voltages.

Any suggestions on where to get one or a similar device?

I tried google and did not find it, it looked like the company was out of business.

Keep in mind, these types of gauges aren't really all that accurate. I suppose they're good for a general idea of things, but different batteries have different voltage readings at various states of charge, and when various equipment is drawing off of them.

A brief run-down on battery metering...

I personally like amp-hour meters. Something like this...

It is a bit more expensive, but you know exactly what is being put in and taken out of your battery bank. If you're truly concerned about the state of charge of your batteries, it really is the only practical way to accurately do it.

I bought and installed this one from ebay about two months ago. It works really well and is accurate. I have it mounted in a control panel I have in the rear of my 4R for the aux batt (Inverters, fridge, addl 12v accessories, Streamlight, etc).
