Unless the 44 was installed after the fact, i believe the front axle is a D30

i think you could order them with (2) d44s (on some models).a friend of mine had a v8 wj with (2) d44s stock.
it should be newer than 96 as far as i know. before that the tranny was weaker.
but that's about all i know.

I would be very surprised if this was in fact true.

There were some Jeeps that were exported with a 44 front prior to the Rubicon 44, if I recall. Venezuelan, I think. I could be wrong, and its kinda moot.

I had a 2001 Grand Cherokee WJ for 5 years. It was a Laredo, I-6, NV242, 3.5" lift (OME HD springs with custom spacer), rock rails and some other stuff. It was a very reliable vehicle. I traded it in with 120,000 and the front driveshaft or more likely the front output of the transfercase started giving me problems. Mud got under the rubber boot which I did not detect until some parts were pretty chewed out. So more my than the vehicle's fault.

Milage wise, I have seen Grands with 200,000++ miles doing great and others went South with less than 75,000....

Regarding the axles: I do not think the Grand came with Dana 44 front. My I-6 came with a Dana 30 front and Dana 35 rear axle (the Dana 35 is better than it's reputation if you limit yourself to 31" tires), the V8 with Dana 30 front and Dana 44 rear with a aluminum housing. The South American WJ had the more desirable cast iron Dana 44 rear, but the same front axle.

North American Grand Cherokees did not come with a front dana 44. All came with a low pinion dana 30. If you get a WJ 1999-2004 with a V8 you will have an aluminum dana 44 rear. The major disadvantage to this is lockers are not available. Only option is the quadra-drive system or the factory limited slip.
I have a 2002 WJ with the 4.7 V8. Lots of power gets 17 mpg around town and 22 to 23 on the freeway. The only problem I have had is a leak on the power steering pump. Something that has been an issue on every Jeep I have owned even the XJs. I have the full time quadra-trac II system with the factory limited slip. Does good in all most any trail rated 3 and under.
Jeep cleaned up a lot of the electrical gremlins in the 2001 and later models. If I was looking at a WJ I would want these years. Also I would stay away from the limited models, because they have digital air conditioning controls that seems to go out on a lot of people.
