Our Heilite off road trailer

I've been wanting to share this since I got it (from another board member) and I finally have some shots to share!

Details first:
1960's Heilite camper, custom built frame and axle with 35" tires, pintle hitch, great storage, water jug tongue mount...I removed the canoe rack for our CO trip, but I have ideas on putting it back on and using it for other stuff.

My first cruise w/ my Scrambler:

My first camping excursion w/ the Scrambler and Heilite; an hour from home, borrowed canopy:

My second voyage w/ the pkg, purchased my own canopy and used a small tarp for rain protection, 5 hours from home. Had a couple adults camp w/ me, they set up a queen air mattress in the bottom and it fit great, room to walk in and out even:

Our most recent trek, 20 hours from home (Ouray, Leadville and Frisco, CO), larger tarp for rain protection...this worked awesome! Kids slept in the bottom, we were comfy in the top portion. While the JK isn't as set up as nicely as the Scrambler, towing you'd never know it was back there until you looked:

Kids slept comfy below, and we had room to change, walk in and out.

Overall we're real happy w/ the unit. We have a few mods we'll be making, probably put a receiver hitch mount to the back for bikes or a receiver rack, bed board needs to be replaced as it is WAY bowed, we both roll to the center...but the tarp and canopy were great protection!

Had to share, pretty stoked to have it.

Ahhh yes, it's very nice!

Seriously, I like that a lot, and quite the bit of room considering the date of manufacture?

Those are great pictures!!

Fantastic find, still has plenty of camping left in it for a 60's era!!

Enjoy!...and many more!

Best I can find, early to mid 60's aluminum box, original canvas that was modified to extend the bottom after the box was lifted...you can see by the lighter color canvas...but it looks rather original. Guy that built this did a fine job, and I didn't have to spend the time or bust the knuckle to do it, even better. I'd rather use that build anyway ;)

Thanks guys, I'm sure I'll have more pix as the season progresses.

I spent 3 days in the first trek, 4 the next...and my family and I spent 7 days in the mountains of CO with it as we toured the trails of the great state in our JK.

Really worked out well. I can't wait to make a few minor mods and extend its use.

Wasn't a great trek into the wild this go around, but my son and I had a great chill time on the road, trail, and camp.

I love your trailer and rig man very nice! I have a 61' Apachee Chief with a CJ-7 and a CJ-8 project in the works. I have a huge tarp to cover down and protect the trailer too. I put up a 12x14 ez up over the trailer tent and cover everything if the weather looks less than favorable.

Cool set-up for sure, once I hit the lottery I am going to go with the similar style tent (serengeti) for my trailer. My RTT will soon be outgrown with our newest addition on the way. Very cool find, and even cooler Scrambler!

The Mecca of Colorado...

Oh Man,
Your singing the Sirens call of Colorado to me! Really...IS there any place nicer than there to own a Jeep? Is yours on the CJ8 site somewhere? I'd like to look into your build and maybe follow along as I do some similar stuff with my 83 and the Bantam trailer.
I envy you...

I picked up a Garvin Wilderness rack for a TJ a while ago...got a great deal :D

I tossed the canoe rack back on the trailer today, here are some pix:

Rack mounts to the front:

Rack mounts to the rear:
206707_535928858970_185901005_31221926_1681599_n.jpg

The rack is actualy several inches too short to mount directly on both ends...so I'll have to come up w/ a new idea -
206293_535928873940_185901005_31221927_2862971_n.jpg

I'd like to remove the canoe rack again, and use the mounting locations on the frame to place a small box that a square tube would slide into and rest and be pinned. Each corner would have a leg that would extend up and bend at just above the black cover where the rack would then attach and it would rest centered above the trailer.

Does that make sense?

This would give me a leg at each corner of the rack that could then be pulled off the trailer and sat on the ground in order for me to deploy the tent.

I had originally thought about making it hinge off the back and swing over so I would have a table, but being attached to the trailer all the time just doens't make sense, too inconvenient. But doing so as to be able to pull it back by myself to completely detatched it would allow me to se it as a table, a water jug holder, cooler holder, etc. Lots of uses for the woods.

Anyway, if you come across something where someone else has done something like this please share it.

I'll keep this updated when I get around to mocking up some more stuff. Had to get in out of the cold, damn snow, winds, rain and cold weather over the last few hours out in the garage was enough.

Well, an update on the Scrambler too:

More to come on that later...

Very nice setup and beautiful scrambler. I am impressed that you didnt do a SOA as most people would have done that as part of the initial lift. How much lift are you running?

Awesome choice on the color as well. A friend just made a TJ6 and painted the same color with black half doors and viking soft top. Really nice!
