We used to call pomegranates "alley fruit" because everybody had them hanging over their back fences into the alley. Most people find them good tasting but too much of a hassle to eat. They make great jelly.

That's exactly how i got my first taste of pomegranates. I was 8 or 9 and the house 2 doors down on the opposite side of the alley had a tree on the back fence, stole 2-3 of them and proceeded to figure out how to eat them.

When i was a kid, all the kids on the block would get together and have a 'picnic' of fruit and vegies. Usually salad, watermelon, grapes, and blackberries.

No soda...no diet soda...nothing. That stuff will make you plump up fast. It's nothing like the soda pop of our grandparents generation.

When they came out with the Pepsi throwback, I bought a 12 pack. I normally drink maybe two or three sodas a year, but the throwback is actulally pretty good.

I've been without a soda for 10 weeks now. The first few are tough, but now I don't even want one. If I eat out, it's tea or water for me.

Leaving the skins on fruits and vegetables you eat will give you some extra nutrients, plus they taste pretty good too. I love to stir fry up some carrots with the skins on.

When I worked in the woods I would snack throughout the day. If you're doing long duration exercise you should be eating a mix of proteins carbs and fat, that is why GORP is a mainstay snack of a lot of people tromping in the woods. The carbs give you quick energy while the proteins and fat provide a more sustained energy release and give the muscles the fuel they need.

Have you looked into the Zone diet at all? Its billed as an anti-inflamatory diet by eating a certain ratio of carbs, protein and fat. You have a huge amount of lee way in the kinds of food you can eat with it too. My knee surgeon recommended it to me after my surgery, along with exercise so I could drop some weight and ease the stress on my knee.

I think it helps a lot if you process your own foods, you get good quality control of your ingredients. I'm going to go granola eating hippy on you for a minute, then I'll revert to my hedonistic carnivore ways. I make my own jerky, and sausage, I dry my own fruits and vegetables, make fruit leather, and larabars, I also can a lot of my own foods, make my own bread and buy good milk from my local co-op. I started because I have an allergy to sulphates and its in a ton of processed foods, and I expanded because I read the label of my cats food and it was pretty much the same laundry list of unpronounceable ingredients that was in my store bought can of soup. I don't know if its because of this, or because I hate being around a lot of people, but I haven't been sick in a few years.

Or it could be the bacon. :)
