I am towing it back to CO and will have it looked at. May also pick up a compression tester in the mean time.

It kind of makes you wonder whether this shop even checked the compression at all. How high was the temp gauge and how long was it that hot?

I agree I think he just guessed.
I don't know exactly how hot it was running when it happened. Sigh, I have to admit that I let me wife drive and woke up to the car overheating.
I called JC Rovers in CO and they thought that his initial thoughts are unfortunately possible and very likely.

found a local 96 Disco with 130k on it. For sale for $1100, Tranny is no good. Thinking of picking it up and moving my tranny over. Haven't decided, my offer $900.

Sounds like a good possibility. Much cheaper than a whole new motor, provided that the drivetrain on the new one is in good enough shape. Then you'll also have a parts vehicle. I just bought a non-running Disco with parts in mind, but it's in such good shape, better than mine, that I'm thinking about just fixing it and selling the other one, or using it for parts.

I have never changed a transmission myself. I am mechanical and smart but am not a mechanic. How hard a job is it? Should I try myself? JC Rovers wants at least a grand in labor.

A grand is pretty steep. Tranny swap isn't harder than a motor swap. Shop around or have a friend that has done it before help you. You will likely need a tranny Jack or can make the brace that LR recommends. PM Antichrist he has the LR specified diagram that shows you how to build one. There is also a diagram floating around here.
