Tibor Tail Water

For graduating CC (big step for me haha) my wife is buying me a new 5wt set up. I am wanting to get a good reel for once, I love my Martin Mohawk but its still a bargin set up, Ive dreamed about having a Tibor for years, just haven't had a reason to buy it. Anyone have expirence with Tibors? Are they everything their cracked up to be?

I am thinking a moss green Tail Water on a Winston Vapor 5wt rod.

I have three Tibor salt water reels - a Billy Pate single action (8 Weight), a Riptide (10 Weight), and a Gulfstream (12 Weight). I have caught a lot of big fish on them. These are extremely good reels, smooth drags, well balanced, and very reliable.

I do not think that you really need a reel built to these standards for a trout rod (maybe steelhead and salmon), but a smooth drag is always a benefit with light tippets. If you want one, they are among the finest made.

Tibor makes good reels, but I think that there are other reels out there that are cheaper and would give you similar performance. I agree with Mike that these are well-suited for saltwater. I have a Gulfstream that has taken on many a sailfish and tuna and it has held up well. I also have a Pate Marlin that held (briefly) a 450lb blue marlin--the reel performed as it should, but the class tippet didn't. I also like the Galvan Torque series, the Nautilus NV, the Bauer Superlights, and the Hatch reels.

Ok thanks for the other brands I will check them out. I like the Tibors style but I am open to looking at other brand reels to see what better for the money.




I wish I could afford a nice bamboo rod for the reel, nothing fishes the same. But I cant see spending $2500 on a rod. I mean even a Penn Internation 80wide on a chair rod dosnt even get to that much together.

You can pick up a decent used bamboo rod for cheap on ebay that would work for you. You just need to know how to pick the right one. The big name rods will always fetch high prices as there are collectors chasing after them. For a rod you plan to use, go with a lesser name--you can research this extensively on the net.

I have fished with a Tibor once and I really liked it. Not enough to ditch my Ross Evolutions for them but nice just the same. There are so many good reels out there, it really boils down to how they balance the rod you have. BTW, ever fished the Big Lagoon Area on Perdido? I have caught some pretty nice reds in there.
