Default Rust on a used Taco

Hey guys need to call on some collective knowledge.

My buddy is looking at a 2003 Reg cab 4x4 Taco that has 102k on it. But its a truck that was owned in Massachusetts. It has Rust on the frame but only surface rust. And there seems to be a little corrosion on the motor. No body rust.

The truck is about 7k which is below book by about 2k.

Should he pass on this truck??????

My initial impression is yes, but I'm going by my grandfathers train of thought.

As a New Englander I'm going to tell you do not let him get it. There is a reason why I bought my Land Cruiser from AZ instead of the nice one that was 20 miles down the highway from me.

Has it been inspected by a dealer yet? The current owner should know or I would imagine a dealer could look it up for you. Not sure if MA is one of the states Toyota considered for the rusty frames though. The frames do get a 15 year warranty if they coat it from what I understand.

There are some lengthy thread at Tacoma Territory and Tacoma World on this very subject.

Mine has been coated and I got to beat on a Camry for a couple days.
