Baja Burb Build

Baja Burb

New member
I got a 1984 Burb on trade and the plan is to set it up to work well for a chase truck at the Baja 1000 and a good camping rig in Baja as well as a tow rig.

The build is going to be a long one because its my rig and I never have time to work on it

The list of things I'm planning on doing,

Cummins swap with 5speed and a 205
Front Dana 60 with ARB and 3.73 gears with Cro Mo axles and CTM u joints
Full float 14 bolt rear with ARB and 3.73 gears
Cross over steering
35" KM2s
Custom SOR bumpers
Custom roof rack with work lights and antenna tower
Sleeping platform
15 gal clean water tank with hot water shower
ARB Fridge/Freezer
Welder and 15 lb co2 tank

Im sure the is more but that is all i can think of right now.

We start with the Cummins swap.
We picked up a cummins, Getrag 5 speed and a 205 out of a 93 Dodge 2500.

I know! Getrag? It was rebuilt not to long ago and they seem to hold up fine if you keep them over full a quart or so. But I will be on the hunt for a 6 speed to replace the Getrag down the road.

Looks like a pretty solid build! What are your plans for the suspension? Can't really chase with whitebodies

Oh wow :Wow1: Keeping a close eye on this one!

The VE motors are by far my favorite out of all the 5.9's. Change out the oil and add an extra quart of Royal Purple 5w-30 (or similar) and don't lug it. As long as you aren't running the input bearing dry or trying to pull a 15k lb. fifth wheel with no common sense you will be more than fine with the Getrag. Keep the pics coming :bike_rider:

I have been keeping an eye for a diesel burb here for a while.. CHEAP. I will swap my 5.9 into that.... they are pushing stricter emissions here, so, I will need to re-aquire a VP44'd 24v to stuff back into this truck....

What are you going to do for shocks? Bilstein?

How about beefing up that front axle?

Very nice. My truck will have a brother! If you have any questions, let me know. Maybe I can help.

I'm not sure what your goals are, but I know I wouldn't like the soft ride suspension. The extra weight of the cummins has turned my tuff country 4" springs into mush. It turned into a completely different handling truck after only 3 months. I'm putting in an order for some custom springs from National. I've got 2.5" King remote reservoir shocks on all four corners and a bilstein steering stabilizer. I replaced almost every single steering and suspension component, but it's just too soft for my liking.

EDIT: Well I missed the part about it being a chase truck. Maybe the soft suspension will work for you then.

Nice choice on the rear ARB. I have some buyers remorse about putting the Detroit in the rear, but I can live with it. I think the 3.73 will work well with the 35" tires. I have 4.10 and 37" and it cruises well on the highway. I think the really great option would be 3.73 with a doubler. Good cruising on the highway and still have more low end than you would ever need. But, that's a dump truck of money.

Good luck with the build. Can't wait to see how it turns out.
