Much like this young man, several hundred years ago, I flew to Bogota, Colombia and set out 'on foot' to see Latin America. I hitch hiked, took buses, trains and walked...Sometimes riding literally on the tops whatever was available. I was in no hurry and months later found myself homesick and in Cochabamba, Bolivia.
Faced with the option of going further south or heading back to the north, I decided to make a quick pit stop in Florida before flying back to Merida, Mexico where I set out once again using my thumb, my feet and available transport to tour the more remote areas in the Yucatan, Belize, Guatemala and Mexico.
Some months later, I returned to America to seek honest and gainful employment. In all, I had been lost in Central and South America for over six months. The experiences I had and the people I met in my travels are still some of my most cherished memories.
Traveling light with little money, 'on-foot' and without a schedule, timetable or itinerary is not for everyone, but it can be a memorable and liberating experience.
A Word of Caution: When traveling in countries having a much lower standard of living, driving a private vehicle, wearing nice clothes, expensive boots, a wrist watch, jewelry, flashing money or staying in expensive places can draw unwanted attention and lessen your ability to move about in relative safety.

It's all fun and games until the flying monkeys attack.
