    Default Hitchhiking to South America

This is a friend of mine I met while on a road trip to Panama last winter....

    http://www.angelfire.com/indie/liter...vel/posts.html

and here he is in this picture from Baja last January....(on the right)

His blog is not pasted with pictures but it is well written and interesting to read. His name is Cale and I have been following his journey since I met him last winter. When I met Cale last winter he was in his first month of travel outside the USA. This is not an overland by vehicle trip he is on, obviously by the thread title he is hitchhiking to S. America. Fresh out of college Cale decided his lack of funds would not stop him from traveling. So he hit the road with very little gear, hardly any money and only his thumb as his guide. He has made it as far as Panama City and is soon to cross over into S. America....

Not much else for me to say other than I admire his of sense of adventure. If you want to read an interesting blog just visit the link...

I have really enjoyed his blog and staying in touch with him. He does a great job in his blog of explaining how his journey unfolds. If only he could scan his drawings and post them in his blog....becuase as you know if you have read some of his blog he is not taking pictures. Rather drawing what he sees along the way, sometimes even trading that for a ride! I have seen his drawings on facebook and they are very good too!

I think he is still working out how he plans to get to Colombia from Panama but if I know Cale he will probily get there for $20!

BTW, he has been on the road a long time, nearly a year. He didn't start the blog until later in his trip. He has one shirt, one pair of pants, one set of shoes, an umbrella, a very small tent, a super light weight sleeping pad and bag, a water bottle and not much else.

Goes to show your thumb, a big spirit for adventure and hardly any money can take you far.

Oh, I don't know about that. It's a vehicle trip he's on, just not his vehicle.

That's awesome. I think I'll click over there while I eat my lunch.

Cale has moved his blog. He has his drawing up now and he also has a map up of his route traveled. His blog site is much better now, I suggest you check it out if you like this kind of thing!

I think documenting your trip via pencil and paper is a very cool way to do it! Goes to show you don't need much money or even a camera to travel and share it with other people.

What a fine read! Still digging around but anyone who quotes my favorite movie in the first post I randomly pick is ok by me Great drawings too. Wonder how he's doing computer stuff with that light load though, more digging required ...

    Thanks for letting us know.

Much like this young man, several hundred years ago, I flew to Bogota, Colombia and set out 'on foot' to see Latin America. I hitch hiked, took buses, trains and walked...Sometimes riding literally on the tops whatever was available. I was in no hurry and months later found myself homesick and in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

Faced with the option of going further south or heading back to the north, I decided to make a quick pit stop in Florida before flying back to Merida, Mexico where I set out once again using my thumb, my feet and available transport to tour the more remote areas in the Yucatan, Belize, Guatemala and Mexico.

Some months later, I returned to America to seek honest and gainful employment. In all, I had been lost in Central and South America for over six months. The experiences I had and the people I met in my travels are still some of my most cherished memories.

Traveling light with little money, 'on-foot' and without a schedule, timetable or itinerary is not for everyone, but it can be a memorable and liberating experience.

A Word of Caution: When traveling in countries having a much lower standard of living, driving a private vehicle, wearing nice clothes, expensive boots, a wrist watch, jewelry, flashing money or staying in expensive places can draw unwanted attention and lessen your ability to move about in relative safety.
