Toyota truck bed trailer

Maybe I'm thinking of this all wrong, but it seems to me it will be difficult to fill the diff to the right level with oil with it upside down. And the vent would be on the bottom...

Yeah, you are right about that. I will probably just get a new trailer axle later on, right now Im not too worried about it being upside down. For now, I will be working on fabricating a new tongue later this week and weekend, I will update more then. And I am still on the lookout for wheels and tires on craigslist, and now a trailer axle as well!

small update. I got the body off and my brother started pulling off all the old crap, like the old wiring harness, gas tank and various things that the trailer doesn't need anymore. He just started cleaning it up a bit really, scraping the frame and such. The axle is leaking so my cheap route of just flipping it over is not going to work, I will have my brother weld on new spring perches and flip the axle right side up as it should be. That and hopefully have the new tongue completed this weekend too.

Well I got to working on the trailer this morning, my brother worked on the tongue some more and made good progress before he ran out of shielding gas. But, he got most of it completed. While he was doing that, I got started on the bottom of the bed. I scraped off all the old paint and crap and power washed it. Scraping all that stuff off took forever; almost half the day. But I was able to get a good coat of Rustoleum black paint all over the bottom. So all in all, not a bad day!

another small update

Slowly but surely I am making progress on this trailer, here are a few pictures. My brother got the axle flipped back over (in the correct position now) and welded on new perches. He also finished my tongue with a removable hitch; for one it makes it a little tougher to steal if I leave the trailer at camp while I am out roaming around. And two, I may want to have both a pintle hitch and a normal ball hitch.

I also picked up two BFG tires on craiglsist, 31x10.50 R15 in size, both with about 70% tread left, so I am pretty happy with the find. Now I just need to get some cheap wheels, shouldn't be too hard, the bolt pattern is 5 on 4.5 and the size I need is 15". Thats a really common size so I should be able to locate some pretty quickly.

Got quite a bit done today, I got some wheels today off craigslist and got the tires mounted. I also cleaned and painted the entire frame, axle and everything and then bolted the bed back on. The new tires look great and its starting to look like a decent trailer at this point. Next will be to do a little body work and paint on the outside of the bed, and then wire up the taillights. Took quite a few pics today, enjoy! And let me know what you think.

paint

Well I got the trailer painted today, inside and out, just about every inch of this trailer is now coated in Gloss Black Rustoleum. It turned out OK; it looks great from 10 feet away, but if you stand too close you might see a few (or many) imperfections. :) I like it though, it will suit me just fine! Let me know what you think!

Next up is the taillights and wiring, and I am thinking of putting down a piece of plywood in the back since the bed floor isn't in the greatest shape. I also hope to find a tongue box and a spare tire in the future as well as maybe some fuel can holders. Although....it seems a little odd when you have a trailer as you can just put the fuel cans in the back of it; oh well fuel can holders look cool I guess. :)

Maybe you could bring it by one weekend?

I would like to look at your axle... another one of Leary's crazy ideas!

Also, what are your plans for the gas tank?

If you are getting rid of it I may be able to use it for something, and would buy it from you... I'm examining options to carry extra fuel on the trailer, and just turn on the fuel pump to transfer fuel into the main tank on the truck.

Enjoying your build. Keep up the good work! :)

Thanks, and yeah I will bring it by one weekend. Maybe this Saturday or Sunday, Ill let you know later this week...and Id like to hear what you have in mind for this old axle...

And the old gas tank was crap, I already threw it away, it was rotted out.

Nice, very nice.

I would add a camper, some carpet for insulation and have a bed to sleep off the ground.

Fridge and jerry can holder in front and wow!

For a fraction of the cost of an off-road trailer you have your trailer that can go just about everywhere your truck can go!:wings:
