    Just an update to this:

I dropped the XJ off at a local 4x4 shop and had them look at the seats, and do some other work.
It turns out the brackets wee a disaster - pretty rusty, and the factory spot welds had mostly failed. They welded anything they could, added some nice large washers to all the bolts and advised me the flooring felt pretty soft and rusty. Not really surprised with that as I like to take the Jeep "swimming" when I hit the trails.

When it gets warmer in a few months I'm going to tear out ALL of the carpeting and inspect the floors. I'll repair as needed and likely bed-line the interior. I may lay down some mats or something to help with the heat I feel from the trans tunnel, but that will be decided later.

I still need new seats, just not as badly as I thought, but I'm still looking.
I wish I could remember where I left my keys...

I got my replacement seats from stylintrucks, I'm pretty sure they also have your seats for your XJ or if not, they can assist you in looking for one. Good luck!
Oh, and I can't get this link to load the page.
I did a google search, still wouldn't come up.

I've been wanting to do that to my XJ, pull the carpets I mean, but Im honestly afraid of what I might find. My jeep is originally from the East Coast, and I know for sure, the passenger side floor board is toast.

I did a Herculiner in mine last summer and so far it is ok. Being winter the extra heat feels kind of good, but I haven't had a chance to really drive it long and hard or on a hot day so we'll see. The only problem I have with the Herculiner is that it is a gloss black but I think it will fade after a while, or if I put a liner in it will cover up the shine.

Has anyone installed Jeep Liberty seats in an XJ ?
I saw a set on craigslist the other day and they looked like they may be pretty comfortable.....I , too, need(want) to replace the old seats in my 93 for something a bit more comfortable...

I'm sure you "could" do it, but would the bracketry match up???
So far everyone on NAXJA says the ZJ and WJ (until 2004 model year) seats match right up on the same XJ brackets.
I'm personally looking for an easy swap rather than another little project where I would have to modify a few things to make the seats match up to the vehicle.

Yeah, this would have been one of my first mods, but the only seats that seem to fit my 1992 are seats from 1990 to 1995/6 before the body style switch. I guess there's a strengthening rib in the floor that changes the brackets, so that I can't just go find a 2001 with near perfect seats and swap them out.

The front part of the seat bracket actually mounts to that rib (above yellow arrow), but I wonder if a guy could take older XJ seats and drill holes in the proper place for the front mounts, or if that rib would still be in the way? I guess if it was in the way you could drill all new holes and you would have to live with the fact that your bracket is a couple inches forward or behind where it would normally sit and then compensate with the seat adjustments.

I couldn't get the damned bolts that hold them off for the life of me! I had the right size of torx bit or what ever it is called with a long breaker bar and only messed up the the teeth on the bit, so I figured I'd just string them up out of the way while I rolled in the liner.
