The War Pig (formerly: "School me on 1st Gen Rams")

So, the Do-it-all Dodge and the Bigger Red Pig have got me hooked. I require a first-gen Dodge. Cummins, obviously, as if there is any other choice.

Couple of questions for the experts, though:

1. Transmissions. I know the automatic transmissions on the newer Diesel Rams are janky as hell and like to be rebuilt if they're abused at all. How's the automatic on a first-gen? If I can't find an auto for a reasonable price, how's the Getrag? I know it can be a little balky, but other than that, how's the durability? I will not be able to swap in an NV4500, so that's out of the question, unfortunately.
2. Trouble areas. I know these guys are notorious for rust. Anything else I should look out for when shopping?
3. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know the fuel capacity of these things?
