1986 4x4 ranger turbo diesel

Well im new to this site and heres my baby im currently on the hunt for a 7ft pop up truck camper to fill her bed, needed for my south dakota pheasant hunt trip every year. It gets great diesel mileage. My current plan is to find the camper that way i can still tow my boat and after the pheasant hunt i can use the boat to go duck hunt. might as well do all the hunting i can while im there. 4x4 is a must in south dakota roads after a rain r like an oil slick ive seen plenty of full sized trucks get stuck in the middle. Not completed till the camper is on her back though.Well heres sum pic porn for ya!

What r your thoughts do u think she has what it takes for a 7ft pop up truck and what kinda weight do u think it would handle i have a 16ft aluminum boat with a 40hp. prolly max 1000lbs fully loaded for the boat.As for the camper what kinda weight r we lookin at and also do u think this ranger can handle all this? 3.45 geared

I tend to think you are going to seriously over load that poor little truck. I had a Ranger once and if I recall correctly, it had a payload of 1000 lb. and it was rated to tow 1000 lbs. The GVCWR couldnt have been much and I cant imagine it is much on your Ranger. Maybe a little pop up and maybe a boat but I couldnt imagine both. What is the payload and what is the GVCWR?

payload i dunno whatever a 7ft popup weighs plus max 1000lb boat but its probabaly less its aluminum. n i can lift a 40hp. i did have it loaded with a half yard of wet after a rain dirt and in order to get this dirt to the backyard i had to move a pop up trailer 2600lb with the dirt in it. Also before i rebuilt the motor i found out that it only had good compression in 3 cylinders the other was about 200 off still ran like a champ leaked oil like a sieve. i will look tomorow at the door jam and find out the GVCWR.

Just because you can move it into your backyard doesn't mean it is legal or safe rolling down the highway. You need to know your payload, know how much weight you are putting in it, what your GVCWR is, what it is rated to tow and how much what you are towing weighs.

This is serious stuff...

i understand about the whole moving from my backyard and safely driving on the road but i forgot to mention usually with a big load like that and a manual transmission u have to feather the clutch with all the weight and i did not so i just assumed that the truck could do alot more seeing i basically did it on 3 cylinders but i will check the ratings tomorow and let ya kno thanks for the heads up can never be to safe much appreciated bro.

Dang! That's a sweet truck you have! That's the Perkins 4cyl right? Being 86 is it turbocharged? Those are few and far between around here--I'm jealous :Wow1:

It is a sweet truck and you are right, tires need to match the payload. If you go with a camper on that, think about airbags too.

You sure its a Mitsubishi engine, I thought Ford and Mazda were together back then. Like Chevy/Isuzu and Dodge/Mitsubishi. You got a rare truck there, I have seen only one other before and it was pretty rough compared to yours. It came in to a shop I was working at to get the injection pump turned up a little. I have actually done an engine in a 86 Tempo that had the diesel in it and I thought it was a Mazda, they get really good mileage. You can do quite a bit to the Ranger to make it better, like axles from a newer Ranger. You can hop the engine up some with a bigger exhaust and air cleaner. You can turn the injection pump up some too but make sure you add a pyrometer first. Nice truck.

"How hard is it to find parts for the mitsubishi diesel?". not hard at all i just go into my garage and there i have 3 of everything that it takes to get her runnin. along with a spare block. GVWR is 4500 lb. not very much to play with. i need to find a 7' pop camper that is real light. Yea its mitsu motor from 85-87. 83-84 was the perkins non turbo. yea it is petty rare and revn rarer r the 4x4.

very nice truck, as far as load, i would upgrade tires in tread and weight, and maybe some helper springs to keep the rear from sagging, maybe EBC brakes, if possible, four wheel disc conversion? idk if it would help you stop or not but a ford 8.8 from a 95+ explorer should be simple enough to swap, i think
