I built my first bender because I couldn't afford the big dollar units at first. You may have seen it floating around referenced from different websites. It was one of the first DIY tube bender builds to hit the internet back in 2002ish. Wasn't a hard unit to build either. Take a look at the Readers Benders off to the left pane for more ideas.

Then I picked up a ProTools 105 HD with 3 dies. A bit more combersome to setup, but once it is setup it is easy to use and get very repeatable bends with. It works very much the same way as the JD2 bender does.
For simple layouts, I highly recommend following the advice given here. It works awesome.
