Pulk or Sled

Looking for suggestions on which people prefer a pulk or sled. Going to do some X country overnight trips in upper Maine hopefully next month. I like the sled but wondering what people are using.

It really depends on the variation of terrain. Sleds are great if its going to be fairly flat and open. Tight trees and steep hills play hell with a sled and you end up fighting with it too much. If you are going to pack make sure it's a close fitting internal frame pack with more than 5,000 cube capacity. I still ski with my Dana Design Terra frame from my 91 AT hike.

Call your local EMS store and ask their opinions and you'll hear plenty of choices.

Good luck!

Pulks are more stable in tight trees, up and down hills compared to a longer sled. Both suck on traverses. Mountain Smith packs now Kifaru made a nice pulk some years back that works and tows nicely. Look for a used one if you can find one. Many people up here build their own from Paris Expedition sleds with a little fabrication. Post up a report of your trip when you get back.

I have to say go with a pulk as I enjoy the additional suppoprt it offers, a sled will ram into the back of your foot, skiis or snowshoes. The traces provide some manuevering capabilities also

here is mine, I built last winter, my son is in the photo:

thsi was right after the build, later in the week we added a MOLLE waist belt to the traces and this was the needed ticket to make it work appropriately

here is my build thread: http://zombiehunters.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=76019
