The mattress is attached by velcro. When flipped closed there is a fabric catch for the tent material. Though the velcro is enough to hold. I have a video of the functioning on my website safaripacific.com under my mx2 vehicle page.
The mattress is memory foam. Not sure of the thickness. 4inches?? Pretty comfy unless you don't move at all and the foam compresses to nothing. I've stuffed a thin thermarest under my half of the mattress.

I found a 7ft section of couch replacement foam off of Fleabay to be perfect. It's 4" thick, by about three feet across, and seven ft long. You wont feel anything underneath when you sleep on it, and it ran about $55.00.
