Shooter trash

I was wheeling in Calico a couple weeks ago, and the amount of spent ammo, shotgun shells littering the place was unbelievable. If I saw one shell,,, there was easily 5000.
Why can the folks that go shooting not pick up there spent cartridges?
Please have a little respect for the environment. Pick up after yourselves and teach your kids the same.

I don't understand it either.

I'm a shooter, started shooting .22 rifles around 9-10 years old.

My dad taught me to always police your brass/shotshells.

If they aren't reloadable, then they're trash.

I see no difference in leaving your empty cases behind than throwing your pop can on the ground. It's littering.

Not all shooters are like this, but from what I've seen, there are enough of them that are pigs.

ETA: Both of my boys know that we pick up our empties, and our targets.

It goes right along with the other rules of shooting. Know your target and what's beyond, only shoot in a safe place, etc.

Fools... I can't understand it either.

With the price of ammo these days, the deserts are littered with gold. I don't reload myself, but I pick all my brass up and give it to a friend who does. I also pick up brass others have foolishly left behind and toss it in the bag while I'm at it. Discount ammo ******. :victory:

That may not apply to rimfire ammo, but then rimfire is only about a tenth of the stuff I see out there. Most of it is 9mm and .223... in perfectly reloadable shape.

There's no accounting for some people. Don't get me started on drinker's trash and smoker's trash...

"Respect" seems to be the missing ingredient for all those folks that let their 'spents' lie.

For whatever reason I have noticed, the last couple years, significantly fewer spent shotgun hulls out on the hunting hills/mountain! It certainly appears most of the Northern Nevada bird hunters have started picking up their hulls.

But not at the casual shooting areas out on BLM/USFS land.

what drives me even more nuts is the use of glass for targets.......can't even let my dog run around in a lot of places due to the glass everywhere. I'm a shooter and it just doesn't make sense; people wonder why places get shut down.

yeah I have a hard time with folks leaving trash period. it is not just the shooters but the trash that gets left behind is ridiculous. Spent shotgun shells are the worst IMO.

yeah it really bugs me as well. there is one legal shooting pit still open within an hour drive of me and its literally paved in shells, im talking 2-4" thick. ive seen all the brass seem to dissapear, but there are still tons of steel cases and shot shells. i throw a tarp down and stand on it to shoot, easy clean up that way. my friend recently got a brass catcher for his ar, its pretty slick.

Years ago, when I lived in Cali, we used to shoot in an area called Cherry Creek. We would drive in a mile or so, to the gate - the proverbial end of the road - to a little valley. We could almost 100 yards for rifles, and had all the room we wanted for pistols.

Some days we would get there, and it was clean. Other days, the trash was everywhere. We started bringing trash bags, gloves and rakes, so at the end of our shooting day, we would all pitch in and clean up the area. It's amazing how fast 5 - 10 people can clean up a range.

We always left it cleaner than we found it.

I agree with spressomon - it's all about respect, or lack thereof...

I will be picking up one of these for my AR15.

UTG Deluxe Brass Catcher AR-15 Nylon Mesh Black

I just placed an order with them a few minutes ago for four Glock 36 magazines, wish I had seen the brass collector earlier, but it just came in a newsletter from them to me.

Now if they would make one that would fit onto my Glock 21SF and 36 that would be cool.

Cigarette buts can be ripped/ shredded and they do a good job of retaining water/ moisture in the soil.. (personal experience)

Tread Lightly recently launched an anti 'Trigger Trash' campaign that I thought was pretty well played. You can see some of their print ads here:

Thanks for the post.

Here are a couple of my favorites in the ad campaign.

It really comes down to responsible users setting the example and holding our peers accountable for their actions (or in this case, inaction). Keep up the good work!

Here's some pictures of a cleanup we did three years in a row.
2008:

2009 (over 20 tons of trash and multiple containers this size)

2010 more of the same from last year:

How can an area possibly have this much every single year? It's just incredible. The only answer is closures or we have to continue to pick up after those that refuse to do it themselves. Personally I'm getting tired of picking up after others. I always try to make sure I leave my shooting area cleaner than it was before I got there, but this obviously isn't an idea that is share by many. Wish we could have law enforcement his these guys with fines but I know that's not always realistic either. I wish I could see a better solution.
