A house on wheels?

My wife and I share a computer, yesterday she saw a Mog pic on the desktop I had saved from the camper thread, much to my surprise she said "that thing is so cool, we should just get one of those and live in it" :yikes:

The only reason I am so surprised (my wife is really cool about this stuff) is that I have been trying to gently convince her that something like this would be cool, but in a trailer form. She relayed to me that trailers are unacceptable, but if she had something she could move around on really big tires and point to whatever view she felt like, THAT would be cool. Rather than waiting and saying we will get a camper/Mog type vehicle someday, why not now?

We are at the point in our lives were we are ready to buy a house, but we are not ready to be tied to where we live, we have more options for places to park a home rather than buy a home, and an investment in this kind of "home" could follow us for the rest of our lives, under its own power. We absolutely adore adventure travel, it is basically what we live for and while an "rv" of this nature could be considered quite lavish, as a home, it is quite reasonable, with a lower environmental impact.
It could be a portable base camp because that is all our apartment is. I am sure that we would be skirting all kinds of legal issues and living in a vehicle like this would require very special attention to utilities, fresh water, waste water, electric generation (generator, solar panels, wind turbine, plug into the grid.....) But it could be feasible, and boy is it fun to dream about this stuff with the support of your wife.
SO...........are there any US based companies that make HUGE 4X4 camper trucks? Like, crap out a 4wheeler huge? Something that you could park and live out of for months? Did any thing happen with the whole UnicatAmerica thing? We are willing to spend as much as a house, but houses are really cheap around here and I think Unicats are as much as a really expensive house.
Not really willing to look at typical US style "motorhomes" because there is no way we would be able to park it anyplace we would actually want to live (and my wife would not think it was cool, so no-go). But, we have our Landcruiser for expedition travel, this would get very little abuse and not be asked to do any crazy rock crawling or sand dune hopping.

Something like this, note the full lift up roof. Actually, I love this one.

that is funny
my wife and I share a computer as well. She found my folder of "un named" pics on our desk top too. she called me in to the office on day and asked what the hell was going on. and she demanded me to open the folder and show her what I had been up to. she thought i had been collecting pics of all the ladies on the internet. I kind of laughed and said, "honey, I have a problem" she yelled at me me a bit and then I opened it. one after the other.......Mogs, Pinz, Fusos and a world of all the other cool expedition vehicles I have found with this forums help...
My wife just said, "what? thank god!" and followed up with, "those are some cool rigs"
I have got it pretty good!

sorry, let me address one of your questions. Extended living in a camper / vehicle is totally possible. There is a growing number of people in the Truck Camping world that are full timers. There was a good BLOG called underagedrvers.blogspot.com i think that was a great year long trip by a young couple out for North American adventure. I learned a lot from read it.
good luck and keep us posted.

btw, my wife and i are heading out in 15 minutes for 1 month in our truck camper. you can check in with us and help us out perhaps at

cheers
good luck

Bigger!

Thanks for all the replies, I thought this crowd would be understanding of the concept.
I am not a stranger to living in a vehicle, I was homeless in college, living out of the cruiser (not nearly as well appointed as it is now) and my wife and I have lived quite comfortably for months at a time out of our cruiser.
But that is on the road, exploring, seeing stuff.

I am talking about a year round (winterized for all you south westerners:ylsmoke: ) self sufficient home on wheels.
Indoor washer, dryer range, oven, shower, full standing hight, pop top, loft bed transportable 4wd paradise.

I like the earth roamer, IMO, to big for "on the road" and to small for full time living. Do they have anything bigger? I thought I had seen one at some point but my bookmarks do not show anything.
Badger trek is awesome, I love their site, and the sportsmobile, but our jobs are going to keep us somewhat stationary, we have the Cruiser for expeditions.

Anybody know how many hundreds of thousands of dollars the Unicats cost?
I really love that one I posted in my first post.

Build it!

Kevin,

Don't leave me, I need you! (he is my neighbor)

But why not buy a new Fuso/Mitso or Isuzi cab over and build it. Make the box, like the surfer Taco. You know how, have the tools and time. Help me understand, the 4x4 Dodge Sprinters are too what? A base model and you doing the interior would be best (knowing you) and it should have the power to tow the 60...

Leave? Hell, I was gona park it in your yard.

Yeah, I could build one, but I would like as much of a jump start on it as we could afford. Been looking at platforms, but I think I would only want to buy brandy new. I do not want to get into unknown history/maintence with a piece of heavy equipment. A warranty would be nice. In all likely hood, a complex pop top box (stripped down version, no interior) like the one I posted could probably be bought for less than I could build it.

Whatever I got, I would probably do the whole interior.

So, how much money do you want to throw at it?

It all comes down to that.

This is the one I want...scaring soccer moms in H2's everywhere. Just a tad out of reach...:D...just a tad..

I can see it now, make the front living quarters and the rear a garage for the cycles.

The EarthRoamer is more than comfortable enough to live out of. There are several owners that do. Check it out before you make a final decision.

The US Unicat starts at $750,000 and has less sense of space and comfort than above. I have spent time in both.

Would you be able to be on the road. I.e. traveling in the vehicle you buy? If you will mostly be sitting, that I would suggest against it. If you can travel like the Badgers, then do it!

Jaquine has a lot of truth in his post, but there are a lot of women that have just as much wonderlust as us men do. Monika Wescott has lived on the road for years at a time. The Badgers have (high tech too). Or the Schmids, that have lived out of a Land Cruiser for 22 years :clapsmile, so it is possible, just make sure you know before you leave :)

Such a project is feasible, IF you use your head and do not get bogged down into doodads and geegaws. Take a military HEMTT (8x8-10T rated offroad capability), or a Czech Tatra T813/T815 (pre 1980 or so-check the import NHTSA and EPA as well as your state laws-this is a 12T rated 8x8), locate a 20' ISO container (8'W x8'6"T x20'L) and build it out yourself. Truck will run you around $25K to a US port from the UK (assuming a Tatra), $2K for the container, a whole bunch of money (but controllable if you use your head to obtain surplus-not necessarily military) for the amenities. This assumes you do it all yourself. Besides, it's a lot of fun building this stuff.

Fuel use is an issue with a truck this large-5-7mpg on the highway, top speed around 55mph or so, but there is nothing like playing in the sand with an 8x8...:p

Nice thing about a Tatra-you can sleep 8 in the cab....if you are all "friends". The Czech military was not stupid.

ADDENDUM:

Personal experience

My current wife and I lived in a 27' travel trailer for over 3 years while I was traveling from customer jobsite to customer jobsite and only stopped because we moved to Japan for 2 and a half years. Many compatable people fulltime for years without a problem. We would still be doing it, but we got a surprise upon returning from Japan...my son Mike (now almost 6). We are itching to go back out with him and teach him about the world by show and tell.....

Do a search on "bus conversion fulltimer" and read some of the stories from those that do it, instead of guessing.

counterexample

Contra the poisition stated by Joaquin Suave, there are a growing number of couples and single women who live full time in RVs. Some people just park the RV and use it like a cabin with wheels, but many more enjoy the ability to travel to someplace new when wanderlust strikes.

There's a Yahoo group called "lifewithaLazyDazeRV" for owners of the Lazy Daze Class C RV. Among the participants are quite a few females who travel full time.

Sure, I agree that most men and women would prefer to have a home base to return to at least part of the year. But it's wrong to flatly state that women can't appreciate a mobile lifestyle.
