Slightly Different Garmin 310XT Forerunner Question

Hey Guys-

Other than camping and exploring I really enjoy horseback riding, I use a Garmin 310XT when I ride (the horse) so I can monitor his heart rate, it also tracks my routes, I then upload them into Garmin Connects to see the loop I rode.

My question is: Is there another option for software to use? I'd really like to load my tracks into a software that I could overlay them onto 1:24k topo maps. ideally I'd like to be able to see lots of tracks on one map so I could create new loops for myself.

I know it's a little different than most GPS talk on the forum but since it's on backwoods trails I hope you'll cut me a little slack.

Can I do that? What software do I need? Any Advice?

Thanks
Josh

It seems like the new Nat Geo Explorer might be a good option for me since you can purchase maps for areas you are interested in, rather than large state clusters? All this is via the web rather than a CD based set of maps.

My question is, can I upload my tracks into it to make my own maps? Will it allow me to create my own custom maps by choosing and highlighting trails?

Would the Trails Illustrated version be a better solution?

Or the Garmin Topo Maps? I'm just not sure which I need?
