Somebody needs to buy this Jeep. I can assure you that just Chile and Argentina would be worth exploring. Use the Jeep there and then sell it to the next person!

So how does it work on a deal like this?
If I am from the USA, how do we handle title change over, registration change over and such.
Also when it entered Argentina was there any paperwork that stated it would not be sold?

I am curious when I see vehicles for sale in other countries how the ownership changes over for border crossings back towards home for the new owners.

I think if more folks knew the process or felt comfortable with the details then more of these vehicles would sell quicker.

Hey 1leglance,

There are a few ways to handle it:

1. We can make a power of attorney giving the new owner all the legal rights to the car and they can do whatever they want with it (enter other countries, etc) Forever. It remains in my name legally.
I've talked to customs and the police here and its all good.
We need to leave and re-enter the country with it to get it out of my name and into the new owners, but thats easy and legal.
I suppose if you ever drove back to the USA/Canada you would move it over into your name, as I would also sign over the title.

2. The new owner registers the car in their name in the cars home-state (in this case Alberta, Canada)
In the case of Alberta the person has to actually go to Alberta if they are not from there (pain)
We leave the country with my paperwork and re-enter in the new owners name.
I've talked to customs and the police and this is perfectly legal "Yeah, that's how you do it"

3. Exactly the same as point 2 above, but we just make a fake copy of my registration in the new persons name so they dont have to goto alberta. Seeings insurance and registration from north america mean absolutely nothing down here, I'm pretty comfortable with this method.
The new owner would want to fix things up before entering the USA/Canada with the car. For all the other countries, who cares.

As a side note, the Jeep can be "imported" to the USA from Canada without much trouble and tax free thanks to NAFTA

None of the options are exactly straight-forward, but hey, the Jeep is selling for $5500 USD instead of around $20 000 USD here in Argentina and you can drive it back North and register it there

The power of attorney would be the preferred method. I have traveled through a lot of countries that way without issue.
