    Default Show me your fogs!

I'm looking to replace my Fog lights soon. I'd like your input. I've run amber fogs for many years and prefer them in rainy, misty weather over the white stuff they are selling as fogs these days. I'm looking for conventional lights not super high tech HIDs or projectors. Price range near $100 a set. I want something better than dept store junk. I've owned several sets of KCs over the years with mixed results. Older glass lens has great pattern and good light output but eat lamps and don't hold up. Newer plastic style hold up well but the light output with the lexan lens leaves something to be desired. Tell me what you like and why.

Bosch Compact 100s are a good choice; you can get them in fog pattern. If you can't find them in selective yellow, you can tint the lens yourself with Duplicolor Metalcast Yellow spray-paint; I've done it and the results are stellar.

Read how to do it here.

Dan also sells some Cibie foglights that kick butt. They cost a bit more than the Bosch but they're a little nicer.

I used GE Q4509 100W aircraft landing lights for the longest time. The housing size is standardized (size PAR 36) and also used on construction/farm equipment and big rigs, etc. The sealed lamps were $25/ea and the housings were $7/ea for a total investment of <$70.

They are bright as hell so wouldn't make the best fog lamp, if by fog lamp you need something that you can use while not disturbing oncoming traffic. I used Lamin-X to give them a yellow hue, which made them almost tolerable to oncoming traffic, as long as I aimed them low.

Now, I use the same PAR 36 size lamp but with 55W HIDs. I got the reflector from here for $18/ea. You will need H3 HID bulbs and ballasts; you can get them off eBay for ~$50 a set.

There is no way you could ever outdrive these lights. But you also can't use them with oncoming traffic.

I've also had Hella 500 and 500FF (Wal-Mart for $55/ea and $65/ea, respectively), and they were definitely lacking.

Many years ago I ran Cibie sealed beam fogs. Probably the best I ever ran.

I'm familiar with the par 36s. I made my living for many years doing sound and ligting for road acts and nightclubs. We used to use those landing lights for effects. Mount 10 12 volt lights wired in series=120 volt load. No need for transformers. In that bussiness they call them rain lights because of the effect bunches of them create LOL.

I need something for highway use. Those would make nice trail lights though.

I love my Hella 500 Amber Fog Lights they work very well in winter conditions here in Idaho. The Fog Pattern and Yellow Lens really make the difference. Cost me $65.00 for the Kit

not to be an *** but... so far the lights I've seen here, i've run and actually turfed due to their glare issues in heavy snow and fog. in my quest for decent fogs I've gone as far as taping over driving and headlites and cutting the tape to make my own custom patterns. What i've found that works best (for me)... I took a set of hid low beams and made a clear orange plexiglass cover for them.( I prefer orange in the heavy snow and fog we get up here in canada's far north, not to mention the blowing snow) My latest creation is a nice cheap alternative. Got a set of Sirius 4156 Low beams and made the same orange plexi covers for them as well. The sirius lite is cheap to buy, although you need to get buckets to put them in. Grote, trucklite and jetco all make a rubber tractor style housing for them. I run these lites all the time and have never had people flash me. they have a very nice cut off, are easy to aim due to their pattern and throw no glare. Total cost was under $100.

Well I know this is a rather late response, but, why not add to the database?

I've been very happy with my Hella Micro DEs. Mine are mounted inside my front bumper.

Below is a rough comparison. Left are stock head lights, right are the stock headlights + the micro DEs. Big difference in close-in lighting.

I have a set of PIAA daul (driving/fog) on my CJ and love them. The fog side is yellow, and has a lower cut off than the white driving side. One 3 position switch (ON/OFF/ON) controls them. One has a cracked lens, and I haven't been able to find them in the same style.
