Default Modified XJ rear bump stops

With the new axle, I had to relocate the rear bump stops and decided to upgrade at the same time. Here is what I came up with, broke them in on the trail last saturday and since they worked great, I'll take them off and finish them up with some paint.

    Thanks,
    Fred

build up? those look pretty snazzy! did you need to do much machining or anything? it would be interesting to put them in a press or something and see how much pressure it takes to ruin one of them. just for common knowledge..

Now that I can see the pics... Is it an Air/Nitrogen filled Jounce shock, or is it just a rigid bump stop?? I cant really tell, so forgive the question should it be a dumb one

Nicely done though, might have to steal part of the design...

    Default More bump stop info.

The actual bump stop is mfg by Daystar and uses EVS foam inserts to dampen the travel. My experience last Saturday indicated that it soften the "hit" from upward travel so I there isn't the loud and harsh "hit" when the rear axle is bumped upward.

    See:

I'm sorry I didn't take more pictures of the process but here are a few pictures of the spare parts from when I started making them. Hopefully this helps with the idea of how they work.

Here they are after painting with only the base of the bumpstop.

Here is the cylinder and the EVS form inserts, The threaded section of the base is covered with masking tape.:

    Thanks,

how difficult was the install? did you have to modify anything on the XJ? drilling and such... also, if you dont mind sharing about how much you paid for them that would be great. the dealers in my area are all screwy. ones going out of business and another apparently doesnt exist...

    Default An easy install

The "U" shaped base bracket bolts directly into the two holes in the unibody alreday there. This bracket was on earlier XJ's to add support to the stock bumpstops. I got mine off an old XJ I found abandoned outside of Mammoth Lakes.

The "z" shaped metal is 3/8's thick as is all other parts.

I bought my bump stops from Amazon at:

    [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Daystar-KU71088BK-Extended-Collapsed-Universal/dp/B003BXUPEE"]Amazon.com: Daystar KU71088BK 11.25" Extended 7" Collapsed Universal Stinger Bump Stop: Automotive[/ame]

Mine were the shorter ones, I also bought the base so I could weld the stop the the fabed support I made.

    Thanks,
    Fred
