Cutting boards for camp kitchens

Wow, that board I bought awhile back for $7.95 shipped to me is now up to $29.00.

I do not see a spray mineral oil there, but I will probably order this one.

The reviews at Amazon for it are very good.

Save some of your time and treasure Corey. Buy mineral oil anywhere - they're all the same.

Very true. I saw a bottle of Oil for Bamboo Cutting Boards this week. Small print said total ingredient was White Mineral Oil. I buy mine by the gallon at Tractor Supply in the vet supplies section - lots cheaper and it doesn't spoil.

We swear by the plastic cutting mats for camp use. Can have one for meat, one for veggie, one for bread, etc. and the whole pack stores compactly and wipes off when you are done cooking. Cheap, too.

Sanitation is always important, but even more so for those of us who cook for others. Separate cutting boards for meat and vegetables is a good practice. Different colors makes it easy to tell them apart. If using only one cutting board, cut meat last. Compared to the cost of our rigs and gear, cutting boards are cheap. Replace them when they start to get chewed up. After washing, a sanitizing solution of bleach and water helps kill any remaining bacteria.

Then you should stop; for the protection of those you cook for. There's too much scientific research done on this for it to be a matter of question. Plastic might be cheap. It might be convenient. But it's really terrible as far as cleanliness goes.
.
Never, never, never use plastic as a cutting board!

Just for clarification, plastic cutting boards are not good for food or knives, although I do use a large one I have at home for cleaning fish only, wood is great for both but so are rubber boards only down side to rubber is they are heavy

Yep, plastic isn't the best for sanitation, however it is lighter and typically thinner than wood cutting boards and can easily be cut to custom sizes to fit into odd corners/containers. The smallest cutting board that I have found convenient is 7 3/4" x 12" the one attached to the large camp cook container is about 12" x16" and happens to be wood.
I typically trim a piece of clear 1/4 inch Lexan/polycarbonate to size and replace it when it becomes well used (transparent Lexan makes this easy to monitor).
... I'm not that big a cook any more so the camp cooking stuff doesn't get used all that hard and the good knives never leave the home kitchen.
I try too camp with things that I don't worry about loosing/getting borrowed (and not returned) or getting destroyed...

Enjoy!

Tom,

Do you know any retail location that sells the food grade mineral oil in a spray version, kind of like the "PAM" product?

Alan
Sorry, I missed this question. No, I don't, but I've never looked for it either.
When I treat my cutting boards I set them and the oil in the sun for a while, pour some oil on the board and spread it around with a paper towel, leaving an excess on the wood. I let it sit like that for a while, as long as I can, up to all day, to let it soak in well then wipe off the excess.
If you want to spray it on, just get one of the cooking oil refillable sprayers.

I use HDPE cutting boards in my camp kitchen. I use separate boards for meat and vegetables.

Most importantly, my chuckbox includes a spray bottle of bleach sanitizing spray.

That I can stack multiple HDPE boards into the same space, easily trim them to fit perfectly in by box, and replace them inexpensively when needed, are all merely bonus features.
