Ok so some of you may remember my thread on thinking about building a flatbed for my grandpas 87 ranger. well as of last week she is road worthy rocking 235 75 15 tires and a custom bed with new paint all the way around. future mods will be a 4 inch lift and 31s.. maybe 32s and an explorer 8.8 rear end with 4.10 gears..... but anyways on to the overheating. because last week was the first time its been on the road for years i didnt know how all the guages worked and to my suprise everything appeared normal... until yesterday i shut the truck off got back in later and the temp guage didnt work so i bought and replaced the temp sending unit and now the guage works but now it gets to overheating. so what do you think it is a bad temp sending unit? thermostat? and the motor is the dreaded 2.9 if that helps

I had an 86 with the 2.9 and remember replacing the thermostat..... along with the head gasket...... and resurfacing the head. Your thermostat is most likely stuck.
