Alternatives for equipment warranty and insurance

The manufacturer's warranty for your expensive gizmo covers most hardware issues, but not all. For example, Apple's warranty for iPhones, iPads and MacBooks doesn't cover damage due to dropping the device or exposure to liquids. Applecare doesn't cover cracked LCD screens either. A warranty from a third party can.

Warranties and insurance policies from third parties are available, offering expanded coverage and reasonable prices. A third party warranty replaces the manufacturer's warranty after it expires, or supplements the factory warranty while it's in force. Insurance policies work as a supplement to the manufacturer's warranty. International coverage is also available. Prices vary based on deductible amount and total value of the equipment.

Note that these policies cover damage to the equipment, not theft. Your homeowner's insurance is probably the cheapest way to get coverage for loss due to theft.

Examples:
Squaretrade.com offers warranty coverage.
Safeware.com provides insurance plans for mobile devices.

What's your experience with equipment warranties and/or insurance?
