Edmunds Inside Line is reporting that the 2013 Ford Escape will be completely different from the current model. The new Escape will be based on the Kuga crossover currently manufactured by Ford in Europe. Here's the Kuga:
Edmunds expects the new Escape to go on sale in early 2012 as a 2013 model. The new crossover will probably be powered by a 2.0L four cylinder gas engine that is currently used in the Ford Focus. The 2.0L EcoBoost turbocharged engine will be an option. Since the current Escape Hybrid has been well accepted in USA, it's likely that the new Escape will be available as a hybrid as well.
The Kuga is available with front wheel drive, or an "Intelligent All Wheel Drive" system developed by Haldex.
Ford currently makes the Kuga in germany, and exports the crossover to 50 countries in Europe, Africa, and South America. Ford recently announced plans to build and sell the Kuga in China. These models use a 2.0L turbodiesel engine today. With the rising price of diesel fuel and the complicated equipment needed to control diesel emissions, I expect the 2.0L gas engine to become more popular in Europe.
