Security light on 80 Dash

I searched - but cannot find out what this is supposed to do. Is it useless? If so, can it safely be removed in favor of a diff lock switch / lighting etc? Worth keeping? Keyless entry?

I believe it works with the keyless entry system. My LX didn't come with the fobs, or any of the chip keys, so it has never been usable in my truck. I didn't want to mess with the security system as I don't know if or how it has been bypassed, so I just taped over the light and plug and did exactly as you suggested and put my cdl switch there. I put the "security" cover plate right next to the drivers door in one of the empty spaces on the left of the dash. I figured what the heck, why not see if some dumb thieves might see the word security on the dash and not bust my windows. (Don't tell anyone!) It's a long shot, but makes for one less blank cover too

I have something similar in my '99 4Runner. When I lock the doors with the key fob the light turns on and then flashes. If I lock the doors with the button on the inside of the door I get no light. It was my understanding that the little speaker holes are the glass breaking sensor. I suppose if it senses a window breaking it will go off. I have yet to test this feature.

That's funny. I did the same exact thing.

Don, does the "security" indicator light up ever? If not, maybe it has already been disabled or was never wired in from the get go. You could get into the control console and see if it is in fact wired in. On the '97 I got from you, the security cover plate was present but not wired in. I transferred that over to my '95 and put that in the place that Redthies is referring to as a "deterrent". If you get into the center control console and you find it is wired in, make sure you check the ih8mud board, as you have to make sure you disconnect properly since it ties in with cut-offs and such, IIRC.

Oh, and if you can do the CDL/7-pin mod in that slot, do it. It is a great (simple and relatively inexpensive) mod.

You can find the remotes on Ebay. The system is probably an RS3000. The control unit should be under the driver's seat. You can find a PDF of the operation manual online.

You can check slees sight in the technical section for a manual on it, like said above you will need the black remote fob for this to operate (not the grey one or aftermarket they don't work) and will need to set it up per the procedure in the manual, takes 5 seconds to do, but the hard part is getting to the contol unit which is under the drivers side carpet. I removed the front seat and put a small cut in it to pull it out. Works good at auto locking and setting the alarm. There should also be a small foam covered round cylinder under the hood near the firewall driver side, this is the beep speaker when arming and disarming. The red light blinks when armed and the speaker thing is the galss break sensor.

The LX450 and 80 series Land Cruiser never had chipped keys.

I got a replacement fob from Lexus for $70 and down loaded to PDF on programing it works like a charm.
