All credit to Randy w/OzTent for sending me this link. Looks like a somewhat stiff fine-meshed mat that allows sand to fall through. Dunno how well it would work for just regular dirt, but it's a neat idea.

Those are freakin cool! Interestingly, I used to work with the fuel systems on Chinooks. The multimat helps cut down on FOD, in this case keeping sand from being blown up and sucked into the turbines.

They really work well, but 'normal' shade-cloth from the local hardware or canvas workshop works as well.
