Camp chair rehab....refreshing the classics.

First off, this post is for Lance....I seem to remember you lusting after chairs such as these; forgive me if that is incorrect.

These specific chairs are older than I am, and have traveled from MT to MX in their lifetimes. You can see them here, circa 1984...

I hadnt ever put much thought into fixing them, but while at the local mom & pop hardware store, I saw some webbing kits specifically for them...$6/pack x 3 packs, and I was set.

I'll let the pictures say the rest, but suffice it to say, my thighs can now be burnt as well as my forearms this summer as I enjoy lounging in my classic camp chairs.

"****** Mate? The chair is broke, eh?"

Oh dude those are it exactly...
I have been watching garage sales, thirft stores and alleys to find some of those.
Classic memories as kids installing those webbing kits each year when we opened up the summer lake cabin.
As much as I like my GCI Xpress lounger those chairs you have are still lighter, stronger and will last forever.
thanks for the trip down memory lane, oh and if you ever want to sell them please let me know!

Geez, I've restrung more of those than I have fingers and toes to count them on. I still have some that are 30+ years old, and I still have enough webbing to last me into the NEXT century. I remember when you could buy them new for $3.99, sometimes even less on sale. Do they even make them anymore?

Black ZJ I would love to get my hands on 4 of them if you ever see any.
I will gladly pay you & return ship some fine habano cigars to make it worth your while....I never find them here in Az in any sort of decent condition.

I will pass on the cigars, but will keep my eyes open.

Yep, same type of chairs I grew up camping with my parents back in the 60s/70s.
Saw them on the backs of many a motorhome going down the highway too.

Our local KMart has them towards the beginning of the summer season every year. I believe they run in the $25-$30 range. I bought two new ones in 2009 and saw more in spring 2010.
Check there.

I spent many summer evenings sitting in these type of lawn chairs in front of my Grandparents' house in the 80's. They sat out front under what we referred to as the "big tree" for decades. I have a ton of fond memories and a few not so fond (pinched fingers mainly) associated with those chairs.

For camping my primary concerns would be:

1. They are unstable on uneven ground. The fact that the legs connect at the bottom seems to be the primary cause. Modern folding camp chairs I have do not have this issue. This is a particular issue for kids. I cannot count how many times one of these closed up on me.

2. Take up an awkward amount of packing space, especially since I have a family of 5. Someone mentioned it above, these were often strapped to the ladder rack on RV's back in the day, but giving the packing constraints most people on here have, they may be a bit too impracticle.

That said, my wife and I have always been outside sitters too. We sit out in the driveway nearly every day for at least some amount of time. I may look to pick up a couple of these for that purpose!

Thanks for bringing back some memories.
