Now Decanter
So today I purchased a D710A, antennae, etc. journeying into my first ham foray. I have a vision where I can use my laptop to run something like an Overland Navigator software and have it displaying/broadcast not only my APRS but show on the laptop screen all other signals around me in real time. I skipped buying the GPS unit as I'm not understanding the link between the radio and the laptop. The guys at the store were little help with this aspect of my goal. Would someone please explain the cabling and hardware requirements for me in layman's terms please? Is it Radio -->Laptop-->GPS? How is the laptop connected? By what type of cable from the radio and the GPS?
There will be other times however when I won't want the laptop - just the GPS/APRS broadcast function using only the radio and the GPS unit. That I think I understand. Hook the GPS to the radio using a NMEA? cable. I can then view the coordinates of nearby APRS items and it will broadcast my APRS signal.
Thanks!
John
