Cruiser electrical help for a friend.

OK so here is the dumest question i have ever asked. My friends son lives in Boulder CO. He lives in Texas. His son has a 80 series Land Crusier. He replaced the raditor, and when he put the battrey back in he got the positive and the ground bassackwords. Could it have hurt any thing. I honestly could not tell him ether way sinc i have never made that mistake. He said it rained sprks and had fuses blown.

I have some unorthodox 12 volt electrical experience having owned a Series II Landrover with positive ground and converted it to negative ground.

Connecting the battery up backward may have effected nothing more than the fuses. The relays would not have worked as no power would have gone to the switch side. If the 80 has a computer it may have fried it if it didn't have reverse polarity protection.

I'd suggest;
Replacing the blown fuses
Visually inspecting the wiring harness for damage
Reconnecting the battery correctly
Starting the vehicle
If it starts
Check to make sure each of the circuits is functioning
Check that the alternator is working
If it doesn't start the computer may be fried.

He can't do anymore damage than he may have already done by connecting it up correctly and seeing if it works.

There's several fusible links near the battery that probably went. Even if they look OK, they tend to be blown in a situation like this, so they'll probably need to be replaced. As far as any other damage, there's only one way to find out. Fortunately, the 80s have a few fuses bewteen the battery and computer. If it does run, good idea to check the wiring. Hopefully the fusible links right at the battery stopped any major damage though.
