Trailer weight comparisons

Hi All,

I'm looking at possibly buying an old military trailer and have zero experience with them. I can't seem to find a resource that compares the dry weights of the various models (e.g., M101A2, M416, etc.). It's a bit of a concern due to my rig. I have a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Sport with a 6-speed manual. I don't pack very heavy and for now it would be a simply hauler and not a full base camp. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have an '05 LJ Rubicon that I frequently tow a 5x10 trailer loaded to max capacity of the Jeep with. My Jeep is not stock however and among the many upgrades on it are Vanco brakes. No trouble at all pulling this trailer which weighs around 1200 empty. BUT, I'm an LJ with a 3500 tow rating. On your TJ, you're only rated at 2000 lbs. I have 3 M416's sitting here that I'm either working on or done with for now and they all weigh around 560-610 lbs. roughly. With your rig, I'd not even bother with a larger size trailer. Find an M416 or CDN 101, old Bantam or the like and go with that if you must have a military trailer. If you don't really want a military trailer, find a good 5x8 trailer locally and use that. You can do a huge variety of things with the "right" trailer. Just size accordingly for your Jeep.

Best of Luck,

Mike

M101A3 complete with surge brake system, boat anchor axle, and 37x12.50 Humvee tires = 1540lbs empty.

160lb tongue weight and 1380lbs at the wheels.

I have a Converted Cargo Trailer that began its life as a 5x8 V Nose Wells Cargo. It weighed in about 900 lbs dry weight. After adding 2 15x30 windows, a 3 spd Fantastic Fan, a convertible bed/sofa, insulation, panelling, windows, curtains, 5" mattress cushions, AGM 100 amp/hr battery, 45 amp converter charger, 750 watt inverter, 2 shelves, 30 amp shore power wiring, 4 inch lift, stabilizer jacks, and 31 inch BFG All Terrains, the dry weight is now 1,378 lbs.

The complete build thread is on the T&TTT forum

The trailer (along with my Jeep JK) was featured in the "Gimme Shelter" article in 4 Wheel Drive magazine's September edition.

Oh, and by the way... It is FOR SALE! :Wow1:

Thank you everyone. Weight is definitely an issue because of the tow rig, hence the thread. I'm picking up a trailer tomorrow.

@Mark: I just read your build thread this week. Nice job.
@meach4x4: I was considering using a cargo trailer as a basis but they're beyond my budget at the moment. It's beautiful.

Nice build

Price?

$4,000

The new price of the basic trailer with the included factory options is a little over $3,500. The additions I put on added another $1,800 with no labor costs included. Since it is used, I am selling it for quite a bit less than cost (as always with these buildups).
