    Jacque,
Your reg cab is awesome I have to say. One of the nicest around. If I ever make it out to TX you will have to show me around the local trails.

Thanks Daniel, I was thinking the same about your truck.

Nice truck. I wish you could buy trays on trucks here (along w/ the diesels that are available in other countries - haa).

One thing I have noticed when traveling in Oz is some of the dead space underneath isn't wasted. Water tank on one side. In case you are looking for other ideas and a great way to keep the weight low.

Default 5th gear tried to die

Well I disassembled the trans today. At first we thought WTH!!! All the bearing are good, the gears look good! What is making the noise.
So we decided to separate the main 1,2,3,4 gears from the back half which is 5th and the shifter.

Then we saw it. 5th gear was trying to strip the splines off the main shaft. The splines on the gear and the main shaft were damaged so bad that the gear itself was chattering on the shaft with no load on it. So when you let off the gas it roared like hell and then when you applied power again it was dead silent. So under load the gear was engaged and off load it was able to move around and try to kill itself and the rest of the trans. I was glad to find a bad part after all that work.

A new main shaft and 5th gear are on the way from Toyota and also one bearing. So all will be well with my trans.

Even better is the FJ T-Case showed up today. It will be just dandy. Bolts right up and engaged the trans shaft splines and even has the same drive shaft flanges. So as far as I can tell it looks to be a bolt in all Toyota swap. I was able to find a T-case from a FJ with only 42,000 miles. So it is in great shape. Looking forward to in cab manual controls.

I also took the Tacoma T-case apart just to have a look see. T-case insides are cool.

Below are some pics of the bad main shaft and 5th gear as well as the FJ case loosely fit to the trans, even though its apart.

    Cheers Daniel

    Jacque...Seriously?
Well I was wondering if other had this issue with the 5spd.

Cause the gear itself is not splined all the way around. From Toyota it comes with like 3 splines then a 2 spline gap then 3 splines and so on all the way around the gear. The shaft itself is splined all the way around. So the gear seems to be the weak link.

The splines are flat topped when they are good and are all like shark teeth now, like when you wear out a bike gear or motor bike gear.
Wonder why Toyota didn't spline it all the way or if there is an updated gear?
Mine started this noise at like 65,000 or so miles. Not to bad but obviously got worse with time. Now at 106,000 it is needing to be replaced. Well really it should have been replaced sooner.

Oh well, It has been very well used since new.

Unfortunately yes, I serious I'm right around 65,000 miles on this truck.

I think Chris(Tacovendor) said he was having the same issue on his 2010 single cab.

There does not seem to be a part number supercession on the gear part number. Let me know what part number you receive when the parts come in.

    Huh, wow ok...

well I ordered gear part #33336 off the Toyota exploded trans diagram. Stating it as 5th gear.
The gear isn't to pricey really but the main shaft is a bit expensive.

Main shaft #33321 also from same diagram. Its what Toyota faxed me to pick part #s from.

Let me know if you can see anything different. But its on the way and who knows the part # could be the same and the part could be splined all the way now
I have no idea how Toyota updates parts like this.

Crazy business I tell Ya... I sure hope it last longer this time. Its a pain to get to. lol
