when in a place where stakes are not possible I use counter weights (dutch ovens, storage boxes.. whatever is available) If the wind is too strong that it overcomes the weight the awnings would probably be toast anyway. Even though I put the legs on my truck for most setups I still use weights to hold it tight.

LAoutback, that is a great idea. now that im renewing my interest in my Monty, ill be doing this to it instead. will be a full rack/awning build. be sure to post it in your thread or in a new one. i really like the support bars in red. you can make them threaded in the middle or on the end, and it will draw them in tight.

Actually, the "support bars" would be cam or ratchet straps I reckon. Simple and more packable

agreed! that is the plan i had. but had not thought of tangling it back further. would help guarantee the proper "pull" if that makes sense.

Yep. My idea is that when open, the straps will provide the tension on the awning fabric. The key will be to find a low stretch fabric and reinforce the leading edges and all seams.

I'm painting the montero this week, next week I intend to begin work on the awning.

[QUOTE=G100;1033467]To solve the rain issue you guys are discussing, a couple of angled supports makes my awning like a pitched roof, the water all runs off the sides. Of course the water that runs off the back side then runs down the side of my car which is where most of my stuff is, but its just something you have to deal with.

    My old setup.

For your water running down the truck issue, could you find someone with a table saw and rip a piece of 3" or 4" drain pipe to make a gutter? A couple of bolts or even bungee cords could attach it to your rack, and direct the water to the front or rear...
