Sweet. Love the all black.

I agree that this site has lots of great info. Looking forward to seeing yours come together.

thanks man! yea hopefully I should have some progress soon, I cant wait. my old truck was more of a wheeling truck. I always wanted to make for of an expo rig, but with the stepside it was a pain getting a cap on the back, and I ended up selling it. The suburban is perfect, I can sleep comfortably in the back with the second row still in place.

My '89 Burb

I just bought this last month for 2200 bucks from the USGS. They put on new tires (10ply Load Range E! :Wow1:), shocks, brakes, exhaust system, and alignment. Only 99K on the clock, all they did was drive from their base in Vancouver up to Mt. St. Helens and back. 350TBI/TH400/NP205 combo. I will eventually upgrade to a 6BT Cummins with 4L80 transmission. These pics were taken while I was fitting up the roof rack, front and rear off road bumpers. I will eventually repaint this beast, but for now it's a fun ocean container on wheels.

Just finished filling out the roof solar system, now it charges at 13 amps in the middle of the day.....power our fridge and other gear without having to fun the engine.... Also, this array, immediately gave my sub a 1.5 mpg boost....... probably the humpback smooth shape for the top of the roof helps reduce the tail vortex drag... more than I had thought.20140729_165754.jpg20140729_165712.jpg20140729_165636.jpg

I am considering solar panels on my roof rack as well as the hood. This is great.
What panels did you go with? Can you share a link? What did you use for a controller or battery storage?

Purchased controller and panels at Harbor Freight. The panels were part of a kit: 3 15 watt panels, 2 12v flourescent light mounts with bulbs, wiring, charge controller, pvc rack. Purchased 3 kits (9 panels in all, totaling 135 watts) Kept the panels and 12v flourescents, threw everything else away as junk. Purchased a 700watt charge controller with auto low volt alarm. Waited until I got a 20%off coupon, then went to town, the panel kits were $150 each, charge controller was $50. Spent another $50 on heavy gauge wiring, connectors, etc. Bought 2 deep cycle 12v batteries for $90 each from OReilleys auto. Made custom cast roof mount spacers for panels to screw to. Another $20 or so for misc fasteners, clips, switches, etc.

I think that I will eventually go to a 6 volt battery array, series to 12v. (should have done that from the getgo)

All together, I think that I was just under $800 and about 4 hours of work

I removed the bottoms of the second row captains seats, laid down the backs, and built a temporary platform for our 2 dogs (Chocolate and Yellow Labs):
