Bantam T3 tire to frame/body measurement?

About to order a new Dexter Axel and was wondering if anyone knows the absolute closest measurement the Tire can be to the Frame/Body without any rubbing issues?
The spec sheets for the various 1/4 ton Military trailers all show about 3 inches, but I'm running wider tires and would like to move the tire closer to the frame.

Anything closer than 3" will result in some rubbing as the axle articulates. I once had a set of tires on mine with clearance of about 2". The tire rubbed the paint off the tub in a small arc adjacent to the top of the tire, nothing serious but it did require semi regular "rattle canning" at that spot to deal with surface rust that formed at the bare spot.
